Gives guidance on specifying required dependability characteristics in product and equipment specifications, together with specifications of procedures and criteria for verification. Includes advice on specifying quantitative and qualitative reliability, maintainability and availability requirements. The main changes from the previous edition are: the concept of systems has been included and the need to specify the dependability of the system and not just the physical equipment has been stressed; the need for verification and validation of the requirement has been included; differentiation has been made between requirements, that can be measured and verified and validated, and goals, which cannot; and the content on availability, maintainability and maintenance support has been updated and expanded to similar level of detail to reliability.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60300-3-4:2007 is an internationally recognized standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Titled "Dependability management - Part 3-4: Application guide - Guide to the specification of dependability requirements," this standard provides comprehensive guidance on how to specify dependability characteristics in the specifications for products, equipment, and systems. It covers not only the technical definitions of dependability attributes but also outlines procedures and criteria for verification and validation, ensuring robust performance throughout a product’s life cycle.
This standard is essential for organizations seeking to enhance system reliability, maintainability, availability, and maintenance support. It stresses the importance of addressing dependability at the system level, reflecting current best practices in quality assurance, system engineering, and dependability management.
Key Topics
-
Dependability Requirements Specification
Guidance is provided on how to state quantitative and qualitative requirements for reliability, maintainability, availability, and maintenance support. This ensures that what is required can be measured, verified, and validated. -
System-level Dependability
The standard emphasizes specifying dependability for entire systems, including hardware, software, human operators, and operational environments-not just individual physical components. -
Distinction Between Requirements and Goals
IEC 60300-3-4 differentiates between measurable requirements, which can be verified and validated, and aspirational goals, which cannot always be substantiated by objective evidence. -
Verification and Validation
The document details the processes for demonstrating achievement of dependability requirements. Verification confirms that specific requirements are fulfilled, while validation confirms that the system meets its intended purpose under actual or simulated operating conditions. -
Availability, Maintainability, and Maintenance Support
The standard provides updated and expanded guidance on specifying and verifying availability and maintainability, alongside maintenance support, to the same degree of detail as system reliability. -
Lifecycle Considerations
It addresses how storage, transport, installation, operational use, and maintenance policies should be factored into dependability specifications.
Applications
IEC 60300-3-4 is applied across a wide range of industries where system dependability is critical, such as:
- Industrial Automation and Manufacturing: Ensuring production systems meet required reliability and availability levels to minimize downtime.
- Medical Equipment: Specifying and verifying system dependability where failures could lead to safety risks or service interruptions.
- Military and Aerospace: Defining stringent reliability and maintainability standards to meet mission-critical requirements.
- Transportation Systems: Establishing dependability specifications for vehicles, signaling equipment, and infrastructure to improve service availability and safety.
- Power Generation and Distribution: Enhancing the reliability and maintainability of assets to support sustainable, uninterrupted service delivery.
By following IEC 60300-3-4, organizations can develop clear and achievable dependability requirements for suppliers and demonstrate compliance with international best practices.
