IEC 60317-0-4:2015 specifies general requirements of glass-fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper wire. The range of nominal conductor dimensions is given in the relevant specification sheet. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1997, Amendment 1:1999 and Amendment 2:2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of dimensional requirements for grade 1 enamelled wire in Table 4; - addition of dielectric breakdown requirements for grade 1 enamelled wire in Table 7. Keywords: insulated wires used for windings, copper wire This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60851 series.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-0-4:2015 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the general requirements for particular types of winding wires. Specifically, it covers glass-fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper wire used for electrical windings. This third edition replaces prior editions and amendments, incorporating technical revisions to ensure advanced quality and performance benchmarks.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and quality control professionals involved in producing or utilizing insulated winding wires. It ensures that these copper conductors, particularly those wound with glass-fibre and impregnated with resin or varnish, meet stringent dimensional, electrical, mechanical, and thermal characteristics suitable for demanding electrotechnical applications.
IEC 60317-0-4:2015 is intended to be used in conjunction with the IEC 60851 series, which provides corresponding test methods and detailed performance assessments. Together, these standards help deliver consistent quality and safety for insulated winding wires used in electrical machinery and transformers.
Key Topics
- Scope and Materials: Specifies requirements for rectangular copper wire that is either bare or enamelled, wound with glass-fibre, and impregnated with resin or varnish.
- Dimensional Requirements: Defines nominal conductor dimensions, tolerances, corner rounding, and increases due to insulation, referencing tables for preferred sizes and grade classifications.
- Electrical Properties: Includes essential criteria such as electrical resistance, breakdown voltage, dielectric dissipation factor, and continuity of insulation to ensure safe and efficient current conduction.
- Mechanical Characteristics: Covers elongation, springiness, flexibility, adherence to mandrels, resistance to abrasion and solvents, heat shock, and cut-through resistance to maintain wire integrity under mechanical stress.
- Thermal and Chemical Resistance: Specifies requirements for heat bonding, solvent bonding, temperature index, resistance to transformer oil and refrigerants, and loss of mass, ensuring durability in operating environments.
- Testing Procedures: Provides guidelines on test methods and appearance verification to ascertain compliance with established standards.
- Packaging: Delineates provisions for proper packaging to protect winding wire quality during transportation and storage.
Applications
IEC 60317-0-4:2015 winding wire specifications are critical for numerous electrotechnical applications, including:
- Transformers: High-quality insulated rectangular copper wires with glass-fibre reinforcement and resin impregnation provide enhanced insulation and mechanical stability, essential for transformer windings subject to thermal and electrical stresses.
- Electric Motors and Generators: The enamelled and bare copper wires are used in stator windings and rotor coils where durability, heat resistance, and insulation integrity affect motor performance and lifespan.
- Electromagnetic Coils and Inductors: Precision in dimensions and electrical properties facilitates reliable coil manufacturing for inductors, relays, and similar components.
- Power Electronics and Electrical Equipment: The standard supports compliance and quality assurance for winding wires in electrical devices requiring consistent conductance and insulation levels.
- Specialized Electrical Manufacturing: Manufacturers can apply this standard to ensure compatibility with global markets and maintain top-tier production quality in winding wire products.
Related Standards
- IEC 60851 Series: A complementary set of standards that provides the test methods for the parameters described in IEC 60317-0-4, including electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical tests specific to winding wires.
- Other Parts of IEC 60317: This series addresses specifications for different types of winding wires, addressing variations in wire shape, insulation systems, and material compositions.
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Guides the preparation and structure of IEC standards, ensuring clarity, consistency, and international acceptance.
- National and Regional Standards: While IEC 60317-0-4 sets international benchmarks, manufacturers and users should be aware of corresponding local standards that adopt or modify IEC requirements for national compliance.
