Overview
IEC 60317-1:2010 (amended 2024) specifies requirements for polyvinyl acetal enamelled round copper winding wire, class 105. It defines material identity, dimensional limits, electrical and mechanical performance, and test methods for enamelled round copper wires with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal resin (modifications allowed if the resin’s chemical identity is retained). The standard is part of the IEC 60317 series covering particular types of winding wires and has a consolidated edition (4.1) incorporating Amendment 1 (2024).
Key updates vs. the previous edition:
- New requirements for appearance
- Deletion of high temperature failure requirements
- Introduction of a pin hole test
Key topics and requirements
The standard covers a comprehensive set of technical topics and test criteria, including:
- Thermal class: Class 105 - minimum temperature index of 105; heat shock temperature at least 155 °C.
- Scope of conductor sizes:
- Grade 1: 0.040 mm to 2.500 mm
- Grade 2: 0.040 mm to 5.000 mm
- Grade 3: 0.080 mm to 5.000 mm
- Mechanical and electrical properties: dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, springiness.
- Adhesion and flexibility: peel test with specified constant (K = 175 mm).
- Heat shock: no coating cracks at mandated mandrel diameters and elongations.
- Cut-through resistance: no failure within 2 minutes at 170 °C.
- Resistance to abrasion: tabulated minimum force-to-failure values by nominal diameter (Grades 1–3).
- Other tests: resistance to solvents, breakdown voltage, continuity of insulation, temperature index verification, resistance to refrigerants, solderability, heat/solvent bonding, dielectric dissipation, resistance to transformer oil, loss of mass, pin hole test, and packaging requirements.
Applications and users
This standard is used where reliable insulated copper winding wire is required:
- Manufacturers of motors, transformers, coils, inductors and other electromagnetic devices
- Winding wire producers setting product specifications and quality control
- Test laboratories performing conformity and type testing
- Design engineers specifying enamelled round copper wire (polyvinyl acetal) for class 105 thermal performance
- Procurement/specifications teams and certification bodies assessing compliance
IEC 60317-1 helps ensure consistent material performance (heat shock, abrasion, insulation continuity) for winding wire applications where class 105 thermal behavior and polyvinyl acetal enamel properties are specified.
