IEC 60317-20:2013 specifies the requirements of solderable enamelled round copper winding wire of class 155 with a sole coating based on polyurethane resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. NOTE: A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is: - Grade 1: 0,018 mm up to and including 0,800 mm; - Grade 2: 0,020 mm up to and including 0,800 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-1:2013. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:1999. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly a part of the scope; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-1:2013 to clarify that their application is normative; - modification to Clause 15 to remove specific wire specimen sizes; - consolidation of 17.1 and 17.2 of the solderability requirements; - modification to Clause 19, Dielectric dissipation factor; - new Clause 23, Pin hole test. Key words: requirements of solderable enamelled round copper winding wire, class 155, sole coating based on polyurethane resin
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-20:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifying requirements for solderable polyurethane enamelled round copper winding wire, classified under thermal class 155. This standard applies to winding wires with a single polyurethane resin-based enamel coating, including certain modified resins that retain the original chemical identity and conform to all requirements. It covers two grades of nominal conductor diameters: Grade 1 (0.018 mm to 0.800 mm) and Grade 2 (0.020 mm to 0.800 mm).
This third edition supersedes the second edition and its amendments, incorporating several technical revisions to enhance clarity and testing protocols. The standard is part of the broader IEC 60317 series which details specifications for various types of winding wires used in electrical and electronic equipment.
Key Topics
-
Material and Coating
The wire is made of round copper conductors enamelled with a polyurethane resin coating. The standard allows modified polyurethane resin coatings, provided their chemical identity remains consistent with the original and all electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties meet specified requirements. -
Thermal Class 155
Indicates a minimum temperature index of 155°C with a heat shock resistance of at least 175°C, suitable for high-temperature electrical applications. -
Grades and Dimensions
- Grade 1: nominal conductor diameters from 0.018 mm up to 0.800 mm
- Grade 2: nominal conductor diameters from 0.020 mm up to 0.800 mm
Nominal diameters adhere to specifications outlined in IEC 60317-0-1:2013.
-
Testing and Performance Requirements
The standard outlines comprehensive tests including:- Electrical resistance
- Elongation and flexibility
- Heat shock resistance
- Resistance to abrasion and solvents
- Breakdown voltage
- Continuity of insulation
- Solderability tests consolidated for all nominal diameters
- Dielectric dissipation factor
- Resistance to transformer oil
- Pin hole tests for insulation integrity
-
Packaging
The standard references packaging requirements detailed within the IEC 60264 series, ensuring protective and industry-compliant packaging of winding wires.
Applications
IEC 60317-20 solderable polyurethane enamelled copper wires are essential components in electrical and electronic devices requiring reliable winding wires capable of withstanding elevated temperature conditions. Typical applications include:
-
Electric Motors and Transformers
The wires are suited for winding coils and components exposed to continuous thermal stress during operation, ensuring durability and electrical insulation integrity. -
Electromechanical Equipment
Used in solenoids, electromagnets, and relays where solderable enamelled wire facilitates efficient assembly and soldered connections. -
Electronic Components
Ideal for devices requiring fine wire diameters with high mechanical flexibility and strong solvent and abrasion resistance. -
High-Temperature Electrical Insulation
Its classification supports use in environments with thermal demands up to 155°C, ensuring long-term performance and safety.
