IEC 60317-21:2013 specifies the requirements of solderable enamelled round copper winding wire of class 155 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyurethane resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide resin. NOTE - A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is: - Grade 1: 0,050 mm up to and including 1,600 mm; - Grade 2: 0,050 mm up to and including 1,600 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-1:2013. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:1999. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly a part of the scope; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-1:2013 to clarify that their application is normative; - consolidation of 17.1 and 17.2 of the solderability requirements; - modification to Clause 19, Dielectric dissipation factor; - new Clause 23, Pin hole test. Keywords: requirements of solderable enamelled round copper winding wire, class 155, dual coating
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-21:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for solderable polyurethane enamelled round copper winding wire overcoated with polyamide, classified as class 155. This standard defines particular specifications for dual-coated winding wires used predominantly in electrical and electronic devices requiring reliability and high-performance insulation.
This edition (third edition) revises previous versions with important updates like the consolidation of solderability requirements, introduction of a pin hole test, and clarification of normative references. It covers copper wire diameters ranging from 0.050 mm to 1.600 mm under two grades, ensuring applicability across a broad range of winding wire needs.
Key Topics
-
Dual Coating System
The wire features a dual coating:- An underlying coating based on polyurethane resin, modifiable but retaining its chemical identity and performance characteristics.
- A superimposed polyamide resin coating providing enhanced mechanical and chemical protection.
-
Wire Specifications
Covers solderable round copper wires with diameters between 0.050 mm and 1.600 mm, accommodating Grades 1 and 2 for various industrial applications. -
Electrical and Mechanical Requirements
Includes detailed requirements for:- Electrical resistance
- Elongation and flexibility
- Heat shock resistance
- Abrasion and solvent resistance
- Dielectric properties such as breakdown voltage and dielectric dissipation factor
- Continuity of insulation and temperature index
-
Solderability and Durability Tests
Consolidates solderability test clauses to ensure reliable soldering performance. Introduces tests like the pin hole test to verify insulation integrity, improving quality assurance. -
Packaging and Normative References
Provides guidelines for wire packaging to maintain quality during transport and storage. Normative references ensure harmonization with related IEC standards like IEC 60317-0-1:2013 which details nominal conductor diameters.
Applications
IEC 60317-21:2013 specifies solderable polyurethane enamelled round copper wires with polyamide overcoats, making it highly suitable for:
- Electric Motor Windings: Ensuring thermal class 155 insulation for motors operating at elevated temperatures while allowing reliable solder connections.
- Transformers and Inductors: High mechanical and chemical resistance coatings enable durability in harsh operating environments.
- Precision Electronic Components: Thin gauges and fine diameters cater to compact, high-density winding assemblies requiring excellent electrical insulation and solderability.
- Appliance Manufacturing: Standardization enables interchangeability and quality assurance in production lines across international markets.
The standard's dual coating and testing requirements ensure these wires maintain optimal performance in high-temperature and mechanically demanding electrical components.
Related Standards
- IEC 60317 Series: This part 21 is one in a comprehensive series covering different winding wire types and specifications for various insulation materials and applications.
- IEC 60317-0-1:2013: Defines nominal conductor diameters referenced normatively in this standard.
