IEC 60317-25:2010 specifies the requirements of enamelled round aluminium winding wires of class 200 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide-imide resin. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are: - Clause 3: addition of 3.3: Appearance; - Clause 16: reference to the test for resistance to refrigerants in IEC 60851-4; - Clause 22: deletion of the high temperature failure requirement; - Clause 23: addition of pin hole test requirement.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-25:2010 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines specifications for a specific type of winding wire. This standard focuses on polyester or polyesterimide enamelled round aluminium wires with a dual coating-an underlying layer based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, overcoated with a polyamide-imide resin enamel. Classified as Class 200, these wires are designed for electrical applications requiring a thermal rating with a minimum temperature index of 200°C.
This latest edition updates several key technical aspects such as the appearance requirements, resistance to refrigerants, and the addition of a pinhole test, while removing the high temperature failure requirement from earlier versions.
Key Topics
Winding Wire Specifications
- Dual coating system: The base enamel layer uses polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be chemically modified but must retain the original resin's identity and meet all other specifications.
- The topcoat is a polyamide-imide enamel, enhancing thermal and mechanical properties.
- Class 200 rating: Indicates the wire is suitable for applications involving continuous operation at temperatures up to 200°C, with a heat shock temperature threshold of 220°C.
Physical and Electrical Properties
- Conductor diameters specified range between 0.400 mm and 5.000 mm across two grades.
- Resistance to abrasion, a crucial mechanical property, is rigorously tested with minimum force-to-failure thresholds defined according to conductor diameter.
- The wire must meet strict requirements for electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, adherence, breakdown voltage, and insulation continuity, as per referenced IEC standards.
Testing and Quality Assurance
- Introduction of appearance criteria to ensure consistent surface quality.
- Reference to protocols for resistance to refrigerants, ensuring wire stability in cooling environments per IEC 60851-4.
- Addition of a pinhole test to guarantee insulation integrity and prevent early failures.
- Exclusion of the high temperature failure requirement for updated alignment with practical industry expectations.
Applications
IEC 60317-25:2010 winding wires are widely used in:
- Electrical machines: Motors, transformers, and generators requiring durable, thermally stable aluminium windings.
- Electronic equipment: Components where reliable insulation at elevated temperatures is essential.
- Automotive and aerospace industries: Fields demanding lightweight conductor materials with high thermal endurance and chemical resistance.
- Power electronics and renewable energy systems: Where efficient heat dissipation and insulation prevent failure under load.
Such high-performance enamelled wires ensure long operational lifetime, enhanced safety, and compliance with international manufacturing and testing standards.
Related Standards
This part of IEC 60317 is closely associated with:
- IEC 60317-0-3: General requirements for enamelled round aluminium wires.
- IEC 60851 series: Test methods for winding wires including chemical and electrical attributes.
- IEC 60264: Specifies packaging requirements for winding wires to maintain quality during transport and storage.
