IEC 60317-50:2012 specifies the requirements of glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated, bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled round copper winding wire, temperature index 200. The impregnating agent is silicone resin based. For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of requirements for appearance, new subclause 3.3 and - addition of pin hole test requirements, Clause 23: Pin hole test. Keywords: copper winding wire This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-6:2001.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-50:2012 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines specifications for particular types of winding wires. Specifically, it covers glass-fibre wound silicone resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled round copper wire with a temperature index of 200. This type of copper winding wire is notable for the silicone resin-based impregnating agent used to enhance thermal performance and durability.
The standard outlines key parameters including wire dimensions, electrical resistance, mechanical properties, and testing methods adapted for the unique glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnation. Notably, IEC 60317-50 specifies that heat shock tests are not applicable for this wire type, differentiating it from other classes of winding wires.
Key Topics
-
Wire Composition and Construction
Copper winding wires covered by this standard include bare or grade 1/grade 2 enamelled round wires. A glass-fibre covering-either a single layer or double layers wound in opposite directions-is impregnated with silicone resin or varnish, providing enhanced thermal insulation and mechanical strength. -
Temperature Index
These wires are rated for a temperature index of 200 °C, indicating their suitability for electrical equipment operating under elevated temperature conditions. -
Mechanical Properties
The standard specifies minimum elongation percentages depending on wire diameter, ensuring sufficient flexibility and springiness. For wires impregnated with silicone resin and glass-fibre covering, elongation values range from 10% to 20%, based on nominal conductor diameter. -
Testing Procedures
IEC 60317-50 mandates various test methods for electrical resistance, flexibility, abrasion resistance, solderability, and pin hole detection in the insulating layer. However, it explicitly specifies that heat shock and cut-through tests are inappropriate for this wire type. -
Appearance Requirements
New in this edition, requirements for wire appearance and a pin hole test have been incorporated, enhancing quality control for manufacturing consistency.
Applications
The glass-fibre wound silicone resin impregnated copper winding wires specified in IEC 60317-50:2012 are widely used in electrical equipment requiring reliable, high-temperature insulation. Typical applications include:
- Electric Motors and Generators: Used for stator and rotor windings requiring thermal endurance up to 200 °C.
- Transformers and Inductors: Ensures insulation strength under fluctuating thermal loads.
- High-Performance Electromechanical Devices: Suitable for devices in automotive, aerospace, and industrial sectors needing durable winding wires with excellent heat resistance and mechanical stability.
- Specialized Electrical Coils and Components: Offers dependable insulation and mechanical protection for glass-fibre reinforced windings.
Related Standards
IEC 60317-50 should be used in conjunction with other standards for comprehensive wire specification and testing:
- IEC 60317-0-6:2001 – General requirements for glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated round copper wire. Provides fundamental definitions, testing methods, and dimensional guidelines referred to in Part 50.
- IEC 60317-13 – Specifications for polyester or polyesterimide overcoated with polyamide-imide enamelled round copper wire, also rated at class 200.
- IEC 60317-46 – Aromatic polyimide enamelled round copper wire, class 240. Covers higher temperature index applications.
- IEC 60851 – Series on test methods for winding wires, essential for verifying conformity with performance requirements.
- IEC 60264 – Covers packaging requirements for winding wires to ensure proper handling and storage.
Practical Value
Adhering to IEC 60317-50 ensures the selection of winding wires with optimized thermal properties, mechanical robustness, and electrical performance suitable for high-temperature applications. Manufacturers benefit from standardized requirements that improve product consistency and operational reliability. Design engineers gain confidence in specifying wire materials that meet rigorous international performance benchmarks, thus prolonging equipment lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.
Overall, IEC 60317-50 plays a crucial role in guiding the production and utilization of premium glass-fibre wound, silicone resin impregnated copper winding wires for modern electrical engineering applications.
