IEC 60317-51:2014 specifies the requirements of solderable enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyurethane resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is as follows: - Grade 1: 0,018 mm up to and including 1,000 mm; - Grade 2: 0,020 mm up to and including 1,000 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in Clause 4 of IEC 60317-0-1:2013. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly a part of the scope; - new 3.3 containing requirements for appearance; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-1:2013 to clarify that their application is normative; - New Clause 23, Pin hole test. Keywords: solderable enamelled round copper winding wire of class 180, polyurethane resin This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-1:2013
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-51:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for solderable polyurethane enamelled round copper wire of thermal class 180. This enamelled winding wire features a sole coating based on polyurethane resin, which may be chemically modified but must retain the resin's original chemical identity and meet all specified performance criteria. The standard covers nominal conductor diameters ranging from 0.018 mm to 1.000 mm for Grade 1 and 0.020 mm to 1.000 mm for Grade 2.
As a part of the IEC 60317 series, this publication serves as a critical guideline for manufacturers and users of winding wires in electrical equipment, ensuring consistent quality and reliability for wires that demand high thermal resistance and solderability.
Key Topics
- Thermal Class 180 Compliance: The wire must achieve a minimum temperature index of 180 °C and withstand a heat shock temperature of at least 200 °C, suitable for demanding electrical environments.
- Polyurethane Resin Coating: The enamel coating is polyurethane-based, ensuring enhanced electrical insulation, mechanical strength, and solderability.
- Dimensional Range: Includes two grades:
- Grade 1: 0.018 mm to 1.000 mm diameter
- Grade 2: 0.020 mm to 1.000 mm diameter
- Physical and Electrical Properties:
- Electrical resistance requirements
- Mechanical properties such as elongation, springiness, flexibility, and adherence
- Heat shock resistance and cut-through performance (no failure within 2 minutes at 230 °C)
- Resistance to abrasion and solvents, especially for wires with diameters from 0.250 mm to 1.000 mm
- Solderability:
- Specific provisions for soldering wires across different diameters to ensure reliable electrical connections.
- New Testing Protocols:
- Introduction of the pinhole test to detect defects in insulation.
- Adherence to Normative References:
- The standard is to be applied in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-1:2013, which covers general requirements and test methods for enamelled round copper wires.
Applications
IEC 60317-51:2014 solderable polyurethane enamelled round copper wires are primarily used in electrical winding applications, including:
- Electromagnetic Coils and Motors: Providing high thermal endurance and reliable electrical insulation in motor winding.
- Transformers and Inductors: Ensuring insulation integrity under thermal stress and mechanical wear.
- Electrical and Electronic Devices: Used in devices requiring precise solderability and robust insulation, such as relays and solenoids.
- High-Temperature Electrical Equipment: Suitable for applications exposed to elevated temperatures up to the class 180 thermal rating.
- Automotive and Industrial Controls: Where reliable solder connections and resistance to environmental factors like solvents and abrasion are critical.
The standard ensures that users can select wires that meet stringent quality and performance criteria to improve the long-term durability and functionality of electrical assemblies.
