IEC 60317-53:2014 specifies requirements for tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire of temperature index 220. The insulation consists of one or more wrappings of aromatic polyamide (aramid) tape of various thicknesses. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: width: min. 2,00 mm max. 16,00 mm; thickness: min.0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1999. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly a part of the scope; - new 3.3, containing requirements for appearance; - modification to Clause 15 to delete the note on revisions to IEC 60172; - new Clause 23, Pin hole test. Keywords: tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire of temperature index 220, aromatic polyamide (aramid) tape
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-53:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines specifications for aromatic polyamide (aramid) tape wrapped rectangular copper winding wire. This wire type is designed with a temperature index of 220°C, meaning it is suitable for high-temperature electrical applications. The insulation system consists of one or more wrappings of aromatic polyamide tape, which provides excellent thermal stability and mechanical protection.
The standard addresses winding wires with nominal conductor dimensions ranging from 2.00 mm to 16.00 mm in width and 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm in thickness. This second edition replaces the earlier 1999 version, incorporating key updates such as new general notes on winding wire, appearance requirements, and a pinhole test for quality assurance.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Dimensions
- Covers rectangular copper wires with aramid tape insulation.
- Defines minimum and maximum conductor widths and thicknesses.
- Specifies width/thickness ratios and conductor tolerances.
-
Material Requirements
- Insulation composed of aromatic polyamide (aramid) tape selected for temperature endurance.
- Tape thickness varies to match electrical and mechanical specifications.
- High thermal resistance with a temperature index of 220°C ensures durability under continuous operation.
-
Testing and Quality
- Incorporates new pinhole test in Clause 23 to detect insulation flaws.
- Includes tests for electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, resistance to abrasion and solvents.
- Appearance and surface quality requirements for wire uniformity.
- Excludes heat shock test due to the nature of aramid tape insulation.
-
Electrical and Mechanical Properties
- Insulation provides excellent dielectric strength and mechanical protection.
- Resistance to transformer oil, hydrolysis, and refrigerants ensures long operational life.
- Solderability and adhesion tests confirm that wire meets manufacturing process demands.
Applications
IEC 60317-53 compliant winding wire is widely used in electrical engineering fields requiring reliable, high-temperature resistant winding materials. Key applications include:
-
High-performance motors and generators
Aramid tape insulation protects rectangular copper windings operating at elevated temperatures in industrial motors and power generators. -
Transformers and inductors
Wire specified by this standard is suitable for transformers exposed to thermal and mechanical stresses, ensuring longevity and reliable insulation. -
Electrical apparatus in harsh environments
The thermal and chemical resistance of aramid tape insulation makes this wire a preferred solution for equipment subject to high heat, solvents, and oils. -
Aerospace and automotive electrical components
Due to robust insulation and dimensional stability, this copper wire is ideal for advanced electromechanical systems in aerospace and automotive sectors.
