IEC 60317-58:2010 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular copper winding wire of class 220 with a sole coating based on polyamide-imide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. Class 220 is a thermal class that requires a minimum temperature index of 220 and a heat shock temperature of at least 240 °C. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-2:1997.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-58:2010 (consolidated with Amendment 1, edition 1.1, 2024) defines the specification for polyamide‑imide enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, thermal class 220. The standard covers wires with a sole enamel coating based on polyamide‑imide resin (modifications allowed if the resin’s chemical identity is retained) and sets minimum thermal performance: a temperature index of at least 220 and heat shock temperature ≥ 240 °C. This part is intended to be read together with IEC 60317‑0‑2 (general requirements) and is part of the IEC 60317 series on winding wires.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Material and coating: Sole coating based on polyamide‑imide resin; modified resins permitted if chemical identity and all wire requirements are met.
- Thermal class: Minimum temperature index = 220 °C; minimum heat shock temperature = 240 °C. Note: temperature index is not necessarily the recommended continuous operating temperature.
- Conductor dimensions: Nominal rectangular conductor range:
- Width: 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm
- Thickness: 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm
- Applicable combinations and width/thickness ratios are given in IEC 60317‑0‑2.
- Grades: Both grade 1 and grade 2 conductors are covered across the full dimension range.
- Referenced tests and clauses: Many test methods and acceptance criteria are invoked from IEC 60317‑0‑2 (dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility/adherence, breakdown voltage at elevated temperature = 220 °C, temperature index, packaging, etc.).
- Tests flagged: Several tests are listed as “test inappropriate” (e.g., resistance to abrasion, solderability, continuity of insulation, dielectric dissipation factor) or “under consideration” (e.g., cut‑through, resistance to transformer oil) for this specific wire type - see the standard for details.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Primary users: winding wire manufacturers, motor/transformer designers, electrical equipment manufacturers, procurement/specification engineers, test labs and conformity assessment bodies.
- Typical applications: high‑temperature electrical windings where robust thermal and mechanical insulation is required - for example, high‑performance motors, transformers, generators and other equipment requiring Class 220 insulation. Use the standard to select wire that meets thermal index, heat‑shock and dimensional requirements.
