IEC 60317-67:2017 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire of class 105 with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: Minimum width 2,0 mm and minimum thickness 0,80 mm Maximum width 16,0 mm and maximum thickness 5,60 mm Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this part of IEC 60317 and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specific ratio width/thickness are given in IEC 60317-0-9. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-9:2015.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-67:2017 (consolidated with AMD1:2024) defines the specifications for polyvinyl acetal enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire, class 105. It applies to rectangular aluminium conductors with a sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal or polyvinyl formal resin (modifications allowed if the chemical identity is retained). The standard covers nominal conductor dimensions from width 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm and thickness 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm, and includes both grade 1 and grade 2 wires. This part is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-9:2015 (general requirements for enamelled rectangular aluminium wire).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Coating chemistry: Sole coating based on polyvinyl acetal/polyvinyl formal resins; modified resins permitted provided chemical identity and requirements are met.
- Dimensions: Nominal conductor widths and thicknesses limited to the ranges specified (2.0–16.0 mm width; 0.80–5.60 mm thickness). Specific width/thickness combinations follow IEC 60317-0-9.
- Thermal class: Class 105 requires a minimum temperature index of 105 °C and a minimum heat shock resistance of 155 °C.
- Mechanical tests:
- Mandrel winding test: Coating must show no cracks when bent flatwise and edgewise on mandrels. Mandrel diameters: up to 10 mm → 2×width; over 10 mm → 3×width. Thickness mandrel = 2×thickness.
- Adherence test: Wire stretched by 15%; distance of loss of adhesion must be less than 1×width.
- Springiness: Test appropriate but no specific requirement given.
- Electrical and thermal tests:
- Electrical resistance, elongation and breakdown voltage follow clauses in IEC 60317-0-9 (breakdown measured at elevated temperature of 105 °C).
- Some tests are declared inappropriate for this wire type (e.g., cut-through, resistance to abrasion, solderability, dielectric dissipation factor, etc.).
- Other tests: Resistance to transformer oil is tested per IEC 60851-4; packaging follows IEC 60317-0-9.
Applications and users
This standard is essential for:
- Manufacturers of enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire supplying motors, transformers, chokes and other electromagnetic windings.
- Design and specification engineers selecting winding materials for electrical machines where lightweight aluminium conductors and class 105 thermal performance are required.
- Test laboratories and quality assurance teams performing compliance testing, acceptance inspection and supplier audits.
- Procurement and standards compliance professionals specifying materials in contracts and datasheets.
