IEC 60317-69:2017 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire of class 220 with a dual coating. The underlying coating is based on polyester or polyesterimide resin, which may be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. The superimposed coating is based on polyamide-imide resin. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min. 2,0 mm - max. 16,0 mm; - thickness: min. 0,80 mm - max. 5,60 mm. Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this part of IEC 60317 and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specific ratio width/thickness are given in IEC 60317. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-9:2015.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-69:2017 (consolidated with Amendment 1, 2024) specifies requirements for enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire with a dual coating: an underlying polyester or polyesterimide resin and a superimposed polyamide‑imide enamel. This part of the IEC 60317 series covers class 220 wires (minimum temperature index 220) in rectangular aluminium form, intended for use in electrical windings where thermal and mechanical performance are critical.
Key characteristics:
- Dual-coating system: polyester or polyesterimide base + polyamide‑imide topcoat
- Thermal class: Class 220 (minimum temperature index 220)
- Minimum heat shock resistance: 240 °C
- Nominal conductor dimensions: width 2.0 mm – 16.0 mm, thickness 0.80 mm – 5.60 mm
- Grades included: Grade 1 and Grade 2
Key topics and technical requirements
- Coating chemistry and modifications: The underlying resin may be modified provided it retains its chemical identity and meets all wire requirements.
- Dimensional limits: Defined range of nominal widths and thicknesses; specific width/thickness combinations and ratios are referenced to IEC 60317-0-9.
- Electrical and mechanical tests: Requirements reference general clauses in IEC 60317-0-9 and test methods from the IEC 60851 series. Where applicable, the standard identifies tests as appropriate or “test inappropriate” (e.g., certain cut‑through, abrasion, continuity and solderability tests are marked inappropriate for this wire type).
- Thermal performance: Minimum temperature index (220) and heat shock (≥240 °C) form core acceptance criteria; elevated temperature for breakdown voltage testing is 220 °C.
- Packaging and conformity: Packaging requirements follow IEC 60317‑0‑9; document should be read in conjunction with referenced normative standards for full compliance.
Applications
IEC 60317-69 is aimed at aluminium rectangular winding wire used in:
- Motors and generators (stators/rotors) requiring compact rectangular conductors
- Transformers and inductors where aluminium windings are preferred for weight or cost
- High-temperature and high-reliability power electronics windings
- Any electrical equipment with winding insulation needs matching class 220 thermal performance
Who should use this standard
- Winding wire manufacturers specifying and certifying enamel systems
- Motor, transformer and coil designers selecting rectangular aluminium conductors
- Test laboratories performing IEC test methods (IEC 60851 series)
- Procurement, QA and certification bodies verifying compliance with IEC winding wire specifications
