IEC 60317-71:2020 specifies the requirements of polyester glass-fibre wound resin/varnish impregnated, bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled round copper winding wire, temperature index 180. NOTE For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified. The nominal conductor diameters are specified in IEC 60317-0-10:2017, Clause 4. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2017. The document 55/1767/CDV, circulated to the National Committees as Amendment 1, led to the publication of this new edition. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - modification of the title; - revision to the Scope; - revision to 3.2.2.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-71:2020 defines specifications for a particular class of winding wire: polyester glass‑fibre wound, resin- or varnish‑impregnated, bare or enamelled round copper wire with a temperature index 180. This second edition (2020) updates the 2017 edition, revising the title, scope and key material requirements (notably subclause 3.2.2). Nominal conductor diameters refer to IEC 60317-0-10:2017, Clause 4. Important practical note: for this wire type the heat‑shock test is considered inappropriate, so a conventional class combining temperature index and heat‑shock temperature is not specified.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Wire construction
- Polyester + electrical‑grade continuous‑filament glass yarn fibre covering.
- Polyester fibre is high‑grade PET (polyethylene terephthalate) from linear polymerization; maximum polyester content by weight ≤ 50% of yarn.
- Impregnating agents may include epoxy, polyester, or polyesterimide resins.
- Grades and coating options
- PG1: one layer of polyester glass fibre (or two finer layers meeting dimensional requirements).
- PG2: two layers of polyester glass fibre.
- Enamel grades: grade 1 or grade 2 enamel over PG1/PG2 constructions (e.g., grade 1 PG1, grade 2 PG2).
- Temperature and performance
- Temperature index 180 for enamel and impregnating agents is required or agreed between purchaser and supplier.
- Heat‑shock and many mechanical/chemical tests (cut‑through, abrasion, solvents, continuity of insulation, etc.) are listed as inappropriate for this wire type in this standard.
- Referenced test methods and clauses
- Where applicable, requirements and test methods defer to IEC 60317-0-10:2017 and IEC 60851 series (winding wire test methods).
- Clause 30 (packaging) of IEC 60317-0-10 applies.
Applications and users
- Who uses this standard
- Manufacturers and suppliers of enamelled and bare copper winding wire.
- Designers of motors, transformers, inductors, solenoids and other electromagnetic windings requiring high thermal endurance (temperature index 180).
- Procurement and quality‑assurance teams specifying wire construction, impregnation and thermal properties.
- Test laboratories and compliance engineers referencing correct test methods and limitations for this wire type.
- Practical value
- Ensures consistent material composition (polyester/glass balance), impregnation compatibility and thermal index for reliable winding insulation in high‑temperature service.
- Guides selection of enamel grade and fibre layering (PG1/PG2) for mechanical protection and electrical insulation performance.
