IEC 60317-72:2017 specifies requirements of polyester glass-fibre wound fused, silicone resin or varnish impregnated bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled round copper winding wire, temperature index 200. The impregnating agent is a silicone containing resin or varnish. NOTE - For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified. Keywords: insulated wires used for windings
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-72:2017 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the specifications for a specific type of insulated winding wire. This standard details requirements for polyester glass-fibre wound fused, silicone resin or varnish impregnated bare or enamelled round copper wire with a temperature index of 200°C. These wires are specially designed for use in electrical equipment windings where high thermal performance and durability are critical.
The standard ensures these insulated wires meet stringent quality and performance criteria, facilitating consistent manufacturing and safe application across international markets. It is part of a comprehensive series of IEC 60317 standards covering various types of winding wires.
Key Topics
-
Material Composition
The winding wire consists of a round copper conductor wound with a fused polyester glass-fibre covering. This combination provides excellent mechanical strength and thermal resistance. The fibres are made from a blend of electrical-grade continuous-filament glass yarn and high-quality polyester yarn, with polyester content capped at 50% by weight. -
Impregnation and Coating
The glass-fibre covering is impregnated with a silicone-based resin or varnish, offering enhanced electrical insulation and thermal stability. The impregnating agent must have a minimum temperature index of 200°C, indicating suitability for high-temperature applications. -
Grades of Fibre Thickness
The coating thickness differentiates into grades based on the number of polyester glass-fibre layers:- PG1: Bare conductor with either one layer of polyester glass fibre or two layers of finer yarn, meeting specified dimension requirements.
- PG2: Bare conductor with two layers of polyester glass fibre.
-
Thermal Performance
The wires maintain a temperature index of 200°C, suitable for advanced electrical equipment requiring high thermal endurance. Notably, the heat shock test is not applicable to these wires, and therefore no heat shock temperature classification can be specified. -
Testing and Quality Assurance
The standard references test methods as per IEC 60317-0-10 and describes electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, abrasion resistance, solvent resistance, breakdown voltage, continuity of insulation, solderability, and other critical performance characteristics.
Applications
IEC 60317-72:2017 certified winding wires are primarily utilized in the electrical industry for:
-
Electric Motors and Generators
Ensuring winding insulation integrity under high thermal stress to increase equipment reliability and lifespan. -
Transformers and Inductors
Providing stable, high-temperature rated insulation to withstand operational and environmental stresses. -
Industrial Electrical Equipment
Used in coils and electromagnets where enhanced mechanical durability and temperature resistance are essential. -
Specialized Electrical Apparatus
Suitable for applications requiring bare or enamelled round copper wire with advanced insulation for precise winding and operation.
