IEC 60317-74:2018 specifies the requirements of enamelled rectangular aluminium winding wire of class 180 with a sole coating based on polyesterimide resin, which can be modified providing it retains the chemical identity of the original resin and meets all specified wire requirements. NOTE A modified resin is a resin that has undergone a chemical change, or contains one or more additives to enhance certain performance or application characteristics. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min. 2,0 mm - max. 16,0 mm; - thickness: min. 0,80 mm - max. 5,60 mm. Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included in this specification and apply to the complete range of conductors. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are given in IEC 60317-0-9:2015. Keywords: insulated wires used for windings
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-74:2018 (consolidated with AMD1:2024) specifies requirements for polyesterimide enamelled rectangular aluminium wire, class 180 - a type of insulated wires used for windings. The standard covers rectangular aluminium conductors with a single (sole) polyesterimide-based enamel coating. Modified polyesterimide formulations are permitted provided the chemical identity is retained and all wire requirements are met. Wires of grade 1 and grade 2 are included.
Key dimensional limits:
- Width: 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm
- Thickness: 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm
IEC 60317-74 is intended to be used together with IEC 60317-0-9:2015 (general requirements for enamelled rectangular aluminium wire) and references IEC test-methods series (IEC 60851).
Key topics and requirements
The standard defines technical requirements and references for testing, including:
- Thermal class: Class 180 - minimum temperature index 180 °C.
- Heat shock: Minimum heat shock temperature 200 °C.
- Electrical and mechanical properties: Dimensions, electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, adherence and continuity as referenced from IEC 60317-0-9.
- Dielectric and insulation tests: Breakdown voltage requirements (elevated temperature test at 180 °C) and other insulation checks as applicable.
- Scope of tests: Several tests are declared inappropriate for this wire type (e.g., cut-through, some abrasion and solderability tests), while other tests are under consideration (e.g., dielectric dissipation factor, resistance to transformer oil).
- Packaging: Packaging requirements refer back to IEC 60317-0-9 and IEC 60264 series.
Note: Where IEC 60317-0-9 and IEC 60317-74 conflict, the specific provisions of IEC 60317-74 take precedence.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60317-74 applies where rectangular aluminium enamelled wire is specified for windings in electrical equipment. Typical applications:
- Low- to medium-voltage transformers, inductors and chokes
- Electric motors and generators where aluminium rectangular conductors are chosen for form factor or weight advantages
- Custom coils and wound components with thermal-class 180 requirements
Primary users:
- Wire and enamel manufacturers (product specification & quality control)
- Motor, transformer and coil designers (material selection)
- Test laboratories and conformity assessors (type and production testing)
- Procurement and standards compliance teams
