IEC 60320-1:2018 applies with the following addition: This document applies to appliance couplers with a degree of protection against ingress of water higher than IPX0. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998 and Amendment 1:2004. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - Aligned with IEC 60320-1:2015. - The scope is extended to cover current ratings up to and including 16 A. - The scope is extended to cover Class I appliance couplers. - The scope is extended to cover appliance couplers for hot and very hot conditions. - Added classification regarding the use of retaining devices. - Added classification for indoor and outdoor use.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60320-2-3:2018 is an international standard from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies safety and performance requirements for appliance couplers used in household and similar general purposes. This part of the IEC 60320 series specifically addresses appliance couplers with a degree of protection against ingress of water higher than IPX0, in accordance with IEC 60529. The standard is a comprehensive update that aligns with IEC 60320-1:2015, extends the scope to current ratings up to 16 A, and covers Class I appliance couplers, including those designed for hot or very hot conditions. Additional categories for retaining devices, as well as indoor and outdoor applications, are covered to ensure robust and safe performance in environments where exposure to moisture is a concern.
Key Topics
Major inclusions and changes in IEC 60320-2-3:2018:
- Enhanced Water Protection: Applies to appliance couplers with protection ratings exceeding IPX0, in line with IEC 60529.
- Extended Scope: Now covers couplers up to 16 A and includes Class I appliance couplers.
- Suitability for Hot Conditions: Addresses requirements for appliance couplers intended for hot and very hot environments.
- Retaining Device Classification: Introduces classifications for couplers with and without retaining devices, minimizing accidental disconnection.
- Indoor and Outdoor Use: Specific marking and construction requirements for products suited for outdoor environments, including instructions to ensure weather resistance and proper cable color coding for outdoor cables.
- Compatibility: Maintains backward compatibility by referencing standard sheets in IEC 60320-3 to ensure dimensional interchangeability.
- Testing and Inspection: Specifies procedures for moisture resistance, electric strength, mechanical strength, and cord anchorage.
- Marking and Instructions: Requires clear marking of IP ratings and comprehensive instructions for correct installation and use, especially for outdoor-suited models.
Applications
Practical applications of IEC 60320-2-3:2018 include:
- Household Appliances: Ensures safe use of power connections in washing machines, dishwashers, garden tools, outdoor cooking equipment, and similar devices often exposed to splashing or high humidity.
- Commercial and Professional Environments: Suitable for equipment requiring higher ingress protection, such as catering appliances, communal laundry machines, or cleaning equipment operating outdoors or in damp areas.
- Outdoor Appliances: Provides requirements for couplers in garden, patio, and other household appliances that may be used or stored outdoors.
- Hot/Very Hot Conditions: Ensures that appliances generating significant heat, like toasters, hairdryers, or industrial heaters, use couplers that maintain safety even under thermal strain.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance, the following IEC standards are closely related and should be consulted:
- IEC 60320-1: General requirements for appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes.
- IEC 60320-3: Standard sheets and gauges for appliance couplers, ensuring dimensional compatibility and safety.
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), forming the basis for the water protection ratings referenced in IEC 60320-2-3.
Manufacturers, designers, and regulatory bodies should reference these standards together to ensure full conformance and to achieve the intended level of safety, durability, and interoperability in appliance power connections for environments prone to moisture or requiring increased protection.
By following IEC 60320-2-3:2018, stakeholders help to promote safer, longer-lasting, and more reliable appliance connections across a wide range of domestic and commercial applications, ultimately supporting public safety and international compatibility.
