IEC 60364-5-56:2018 covers general requirements for safety services, selection and erection of electrical supply systems for safety services and electrical safety sources. Standby electrical supply systems are outside the scope of this part. This part does not apply to installations in hazardous areas (BE3), for which requirements are given in IEC 60079-14. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2009. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: 1) Modifications to normative references and terms and definitions. 2) Under electrical circuits for safety services, addition of requirements concerning circuit and overcurrent protection in order to maintain reliability of safety service power supplies under fire conditions. 3) Under electrical circuits for safety services, addition of requirements stating that circuits for safety services are not to be protected by RCDs or AFDDs. 4) Under emergency lighting applications, addition of requirements to prevent emergency lighting systems being adversely affected by any control system. 5) Addition of requirements for all emergency luminaires in the area to provide full design light output in the event of any final circuit failure. 6) Addition of a new Annex D (informative): Fire switch. 7) Addition of a new Annex E (informative): Example of installation methods of safety services with cable management system. 8) Addition of a new Annex F (informative): Wiring systems. 9) Addition of a new Annex G (informative): Guidance on suitable locations for electrical sources for safety services.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60364-5-56:2018 - "Low‑voltage electrical installations - Part 5‑56: Selection and erection of electrical equipment - Safety services" is the third edition (2018) international standard that sets out general requirements for designing, selecting and erecting electrical supply systems dedicated to safety services in low‑voltage installations. It covers the electrical sources, circuits and wiring methods intended to maintain essential safety functions (for example emergency lighting, fire pumps and alarm circuits). Standby supply systems for non‑safety purposes are excluded, and installations in hazardous areas are covered by IEC 60079‑14.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions - Clarifies terms such as electrical source for safety services, preferential circuit, emergency lighting luminaire, and response time.
- Electrical sources for safety services - Requirements for selection and siting of sources (including UPS and engine-driven sets where appropriate) and guidance on suitable locations (new informative Annex G).
- Electrical circuits of safety services - New and revised rules to maintain reliability under fire conditions, including:
- Circuit and overcurrent protection provisions to ensure continuity during fire.
- Prohibition on protection by RCDs or AFDDs for circuits designated as safety services (to avoid unwanted disconnection).
- Wiring systems - Guidance and design considerations for wiring and cable management dedicated to safety services (see new Annex F on wiring systems and Annex E showing cable management examples).
- Emergency lighting - Measures to prevent control systems from adversely affecting emergency lighting; requirement that all emergency luminaires in an area provide full design light output if any final circuit fails.
- Fire protection devices - New informative Annex D describing the fire switch and its installation considerations.
- Tests and referenced standards - Links to cable fire tests (IEC 60331, IEC 60332), luminaire requirements (IEC 60598‑2‑22), UPS standards (IEC 62040 series), and emergency lighting guidance (ISO 30061).
Practical applications and who should use it
IEC 60364‑5‑56 is essential for:
- Electrical designers and engineers specifying safety power supplies, emergency lighting and fire‑safety circuits.
- Installers and contractors implementing wiring systems and cable management for safety services.
- Building owners, facility managers and safety officers ensuring compliance with internationally recognized practices.
- Code authorities and inspectors referencing technical requirements for evacuation systems, emergency lighting, fire pumps and other life‑safety electrical installations.
Typical applications: hospitals, schools, transportation hubs, high‑rise buildings, shopping centres and any facility where reliable low‑voltage safety services are required for life‑safety, fire protection and safe evacuation.
