The particular requirements of this part of IEC 60364 apply to the electrical installations in locations containing a fixed bath (bath tub) or shower and to the surrounding zones as described in this standard. This standard does not apply to emergency facilities, e.g. emergency showers used in industrial areas or laboratories.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60364-7-701:2006 specifies safety requirements for low-voltage electrical installations in locations containing a fixed bath (bathtub) or shower. It covers the electrical installation and defined surrounding zones (zones 0, 1 and 2), protective measures to reduce risk of electric shock, and special requirements for equipment installed in these zones. The standard excludes emergency showers (industrial/laboratory) and notes additional rules for prefabricated bath/shower units and medical treatment areas.

- Zone 0: interior of the bath tub or shower basin (for showers without a basin the height is 10 cm).
- Zone 1: space above the bath/shower up to the highest fixed shower head or 225 cm above finished floor (whichever is higher); includes the area circumscribing the bathtub or defined horizontal distance for showers without basins. The space under the bath is considered zone 1.
- Zone 2: extends from the boundary of zone 1 outward to 60 cm horizontally and up to the same horizontal plane as zone 1. (National variations are noted in the standard.)
- Protection against direct contact
- Equipment in zones 0–2 must provide protection by barriers/enclosures with at least IPXXB or IP2X, or by insulation capable of withstanding 500 V a.c. RMS for 1 minute.
- Additional protection
- Residual Current Devices (RCDs) with rated residual operating current ≤ 30 mA are required to protect circuits in rooms containing a bath or shower, with limited exceptions (e.g., SELV/PELV or electrically separated single-equipment circuits). National derogations (e.g., on PELV use) are noted.
- Supplementary local equipotential bonding must connect protective conductors to exposed-conductive and accessible extraneous-conductive parts (water, heating, gas, structural metal parts). Bonding conductor cross-sections follow IEC 60364-5-54 requirements.
- Scope limitations and notes
- Does not apply to emergency showers or some specialized medical installations. Country-specific deviations and additional notes are included in the standard.
