IEC 60364-7-706:2024 applies to: • fixed equipment within conducting locations with restricted movement; and • supplies to equipment used within conducting locations with restricted movement. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005 and Amendment 1:2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The structure of clauses 706.41X has been updated following the structure of IEC 60364-4-41:2005 and IEC 60364-4-41:2005/AMD1:2017.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60364-7-706:2024 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifying safety and installation requirements for low-voltage electrical installations in conducting locations with restricted movement. This third edition, published in 2024, outlines measures to mitigate the heightened risk of electric shock in spaces where movement is confined and contact with conductive parts is likely. The standard:
- Applies to fixed equipment located in conducting locations with restricted movement
- Covers the supplies and connections to equipment used within these challenging environments
- Updates and replaces the previous edition (2005) and its 2019 amendment, notably restructuring requirements to align with IEC 60364-4-41
Compliance with IEC 60364-7-706:2024 helps ensure electrical safety, reduce hazards, and meet global best practices in high-risk, metallic or conductive surroundings.
Key Topics
Conducting Locations with Restricted Movement
- Defined as spaces mainly surrounded by extraneous-conductive-parts, where physical contact with these conductive surfaces is likely and interruption of this contact is difficult.
- Examples include metal tanks, boiler interiors, and certain industrial process vessels.
Protection for Safety
- Requirements build upon the general rules of the IEC 60364 series, supplementing them with specific measures for confined, conductive environments.
- Covers protection against electric shock using various measures:
- Automatic disconnection of supply
- Double or reinforced insulation
- Electrical separation
- SELV (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) and PELV (Protective Extra-Low Voltage) systems
Supplementary Protective Equipotential Bonding
- Essential for minimizing the potential difference between exposed- and extraneous-conductive-parts.
- Enhances safety by reducing the risk of dangerous touch voltages.
Location and Selection of Power Sources
- Requirements for locating transformers or SELV/PELV sources outside the restricted area, unless integrated as fixed installation components.
Use of Residual Current Devices (RCDs)
- Mandatory in AC systems for additional protection, with a rated residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA.
Applications
IEC 60364-7-706:2024 is vital in environments where metallic enclosures and constrained spaces could expose workers or equipment to increased electrical hazards. Practical applications include:
- Industrial Maintenance and Repairs: Ensures safe operation and servicing of equipment within tanks, boilers, silos, and electrical rooms.
- Manufacturing Facilities: Applies to production lines with automated machinery installed in conductive and restrictive enclosures.
- Utilities and Energy Sectors: Guides safe installation and operation within high-risk containment zones in power plants, refineries, and water treatment plants.
- Specialized Equipment Use: Regulates supply to mobile or hand-held equipment used in confined metallic spaces to prevent accidental electric shock.
By adhering to IEC 60364-7-706:2024, organizations achieve compliance, elevate worker safety, and minimize risks inherent to electrical installations in restricted conductive environments.
Related Standards
Several other IEC standards complement and inform the requirements of IEC 60364-7-706:2024:
- IEC 60364-1 to 60364-6: General requirements for low-voltage electrical installations
- IEC 60364-4-41: Protection for safety - Protection against electric shock
- IEC 60974-9: Arc welding equipment - Installation and use (notably referenced for welding source requirements in some countries)
- IEC 60364-8: Energy efficiency, smart systems, and other advanced aspects for low-voltage installations
Ensuring alignment with these related standards enables comprehensive safety and operational effectiveness in electrical installations.
