IEC 60401-3:2015 gives guidelines for a uniform method of presentation for the properties of magnetically soft ferrite materials and measuring conditions under which they should be determined. It is intended for use in manufacturers' catalogues of transformer and inductor cores, in order to aid the comparability of such data. Additional guidance is given for users and manufacturers concerning testing and specification of reliability for ferrite cores and for devices using ferrite cores. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of reliability in Clause 6.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60401-3:2015 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on terms and nomenclature for magnetically soft ferrite cores. Specifically, Part 3 provides guidelines on the format of data presented in manufacturers' catalogues for transformer and inductor cores made from soft ferrites. This standard aims to promote uniformity and comparability of material property data, including the conditions under which those properties are measured.
This edition, published in 2015, introduces significant updates such as the inclusion of reliability guidelines for ferrite cores, reflecting increased attention to performance assurance in practical applications. The standard serves as a critical resource to manufacturers, designers, and users in the electrotechnical field who require consistency and clarity in core material specifications.
Key Topics
-
Uniform Presentation: IEC 60401-3 sets forth a standardized format for manufacturers to present the properties of soft ferrite materials. This includes essential parameters like magnetic permeability, core loss, and breakdown voltage, with clearly defined measuring conditions to ensure data consistency.
-
Measuring Methods: The standard references other IEC measurement standards such as IEC 62044-1, IEC 62044-2, and IEC 62044-3, harmonizing the procedures for obtaining magnetic property data under low and high excitation levels. Ring cores ranging from sizes R10 to R36 are typically used for testing.
-
Material Property Tables: The guideline provides tables indicating recommended material properties and their measurement conditions. Manufacturers are advised to use underlined conditions as primary reference points to maximize comparability.
-
Reliability Assessment: New in this edition is Clause 6, which specifies how to evaluate and present the reliability of ferrite cores. It covers testing protocols and criteria that help assess core durability and performance stability over time and under different operating conditions.
-
Limitations and Use Cases: The standard emphasizes that catalogue data represents material characteristics measured on test samples and may not directly correspond to core parameters in actual devices due to geometry and production variations. Manufacturers should clearly communicate these limitations to users.
Applications
IEC 60401-3:2015 is extensively used in the electronics and electrical engineering sectors, especially by:
-
Core Manufacturers: To standardize documentation and presentation of transformer and inductor core materials, fostering transparent communication with customers.
-
Design Engineers: To compare ferrite core materials from different suppliers effectively, enabling better-informed decisions for transformer and inductor design.
-
Quality Assurance Teams: To implement reliability testing and ensure consistent core performance in end-user applications such as power supplies, telecommunications, and automotive electronics.
-
Catalog and Datasheet Preparation: Used as a framework to prepare technical catalogues that are clear and internationally comprehensible.
This standard supports improved reliability modeling, better material selection, and more accurate performance prediction of magnetic components critical in energy-efficient power conversion and electromagnetic compatibility.
Related Standards
IEC 60401-3 is part of the broader IEC 60401 series, which collectively addresses core terminology and nomenclature for magnetically soft ferrite materials. Related standards essential for measurement methods and classification include:
-
IEC 61332:2005 – Soft ferrite material classification, which categorizes ferrites for systematic identification.
-
IEC 62044-1 – General measuring methods for soft magnetic materials.
-
IEC 62044-2 – Measurement of magnetic properties at low excitation levels.
-
IEC 62044-3 – Measurement of magnetic properties at high excitation levels.
These standards complement IEC 60401-3 by establishing comprehensive methods to accurately determine core properties under various conditions. Collectively, this facilitates harmonized testing, data presentation, and reliable selection of ferrite core materials worldwide.
By adhering to IEC 60401-3:2015 guidelines, manufacturers and users can ensure that transformer and inductor core data is presented clearly and consistently, enhancing global understanding and fostering innovation in magnetic components for electrical and electronic applications.
