IEC 60404-12:2023 is applicable to surface insulation coatings on electrical steel strip and sheet classified in IEC 60404-1-1. This document defines the general principles and technical details of the tests for the assessment of the thermal endurance of surface insulation coatings on electrical steel strip and sheet. The assessment is made by evaluating the change of a specified property of the surface insulation coating due to a heat treatment at a specified temperature up to 850 °C for a specified duration time up to 2 500 h. The specified property is measured at an ambient temperature of (23 ± 5) °C both without heat treatment and after heat treatment. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: the method of test for adhesion has been modified to match to the method of bend test specified in ISO 1519 using a cylindrical mandrel of 32 mm in diameter instead of the 30 mm diameter mandrel specified in the first edition; the method of test for interlaminar insulation resistance has been modified to match to the method specified in IEC 60404-11 and the modified Franklin test has been removed; the method of test for compressibility has been modified to match to the method of test for stacking factor specified in IEC 60404-13; the concept of "resistance grades" has been removed; the clamping pressure to be used at temperature ratings above 500 °C has been reduced to (0,01 ± 0,001) N/mm2; the testing for continuous exposure has been made a subject to an agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser and the procedure has been moved to an informative Annex A.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60404-12:2023 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies methods for testing the thermal endurance of surface insulation coatings on electrical steel strip and sheet. The standard applies to coatings classified under IEC 60404-1-1 and establishes principles and technical details for assessing the durability of these coatings when subjected to elevated temperatures up to 850 °C for durations of up to 2,500 hours.
The primary focus of IEC 60404-12:2023 is to evaluate changes in specified coating properties after heat treatment, with measurements taken at ambient temperature (23 ± 5) °C before and after the thermal exposure. It addresses key coating properties such as adhesion, surface insulation resistance, and stacking factor, which are critical to the performance and reliability of electrical steel components in industrial applications.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
Applies to surface insulation coatings on electrical steel strip and sheet. Excludes properties unrelated to thermal endurance, such as welding characteristics or discoloration. -
Thermal Endurance Testing
The assessment involves subjecting coatings to heat treatments at specified temperatures (up to 850 °C) and durations (up to 2,500 hours), then measuring the change in selected coating properties. -
Test Methods
- Adhesion: Modified to align with ISO 1519 bend test, using a 32 mm diameter cylindrical mandrel, ensuring standardization and reproducibility.
- Surface Insulation Resistance: Updated to match IEC 60404-11 test methods, with the removal of the modified Franklin test.
- Stacking Factor (Compressibility): Adjusted to conform with IEC 60404-13 methods, reflecting the stacking behavior of coated laminations under mechanical pressure.
-
Test Conditions and Clamping
Clamping pressures differ based on temperature ratings - for temperatures above 500 °C, the clamping pressure is reduced to (0.01 ± 0.001) N/mm². Test specimen preparation and clamping procedures are standardized to ensure consistent results. -
Continuous Exposure Testing
Introduced as an optional test subject to agreement between manufacturer and purchaser, outlined in informative Annex A, to evaluate coating endurance under prolonged temperature exposure. -
Technical Revisions from Previous Edition
The 2023 edition supersedes the 1992 version, incorporating major updates to test methods, removal of "resistance grades," and refined technical procedures to ensure modern compliance.
Applications
IEC 60404-12:2023 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and purchasers involved with electrical steel products featuring surface insulation coatings. Key application sectors include:
-
Electrical Steel Manufacturing
Ensuring that insulation coatings maintain their functional integrity after thermal exposure during processing or end-use conditions. -
Transformer and Motor Industry
Improving the reliability and efficiency of laminated steel cores subject to elevated operating temperatures. -
Quality Assurance and Compliance Testing
Enables suppliers and purchasers to verify that surface coatings meet strict thermal endurance criteria, minimizing premature failure risk. -
Research and Development
Facilitates the development of new coating materials with enhanced thermal stability by providing standardized test methodologies.
