Applies to magnetic material intended for the construction of magnetic circuits. These materials correspond respectively to classes C.21 and B.2 of IEC 60404-1: 2000. This standard defines the grades of cold-rolled electrical non-oriented non-alloyed (non alloyed steel is that steel the basic constituent of which is iron containing alloying elements in amounts smaller than the limiting values fixed by ISO 4948 1) or alloyed (alloyed steel is that steel the basic constituent of which is iron containing alloying elements in amounts equal to or greater than the limiting values fixed by ISO 4948 1) steel sheet and strip delivered in the semi-processed state, i.e. without final heat treatment, of nominal thicknesses given in Tables 1 and 2. It specifies general requirements, the magnetic properties, the geometrical characteristics and tolerances, technological characteristics as well as the inspection procedure.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60404-8-3:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for cold-rolled electrical steel sheet and strip, both non-alloyed and alloyed, delivered in a semi-processed state. This standard applies to magnetic materials used to construct magnetic circuits, corresponding to classes C.21 and B.2 of IEC 60404-1:2000. It defines the technical, magnetic, geometrical, and tolerancing properties of these materials, focusing on cold-rolled electrical steels without final heat treatment.
The document delivers comprehensive guidelines on manufacturing processes, delivery conditions, magnetic properties, dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and inspection procedures to ensure the materials meet industry requirements. Its scope supports the production and application of magnetic steels critical for electrical engineering and electromechanical devices.
Key Topics
- Material Classification: Defines cold-rolled electrical steel sheets and strips in non-alloyed and alloyed categories, with specific alloying limits based on ISO 4948-1.
- Technical Requirements: Includes magnetic properties such as permeability and total specific losses at power frequencies (50 Hz and 60 Hz), and technological characteristics related to cutting and surface state.
- Geometrical Characteristics: Specifies thickness ranges, width tolerances, surface condition standards, and dimensional accuracy essential for precision manufacturing.
- Manufacturing Process: Details requirements for cold-rolling and semi-processed delivery without final heat treatment, ensuring predictable magnetic behavior.
- Inspection and Testing: Describes sampling methods, preparation of test specimens, and standardized test procedures to verify magnetic performance and physical properties.
- Marking and Packaging: Establishes protocols to ensure traceability, proper identification, and protection during transportation and storage.
Applications
IEC 60404-8-3 steel materials are primarily used in:
- Electric Motors and Generators: Magnetic circuits require low-loss, high-permeability steel sheets for efficient electromagnetic performance.
- Transformers: Cold-rolled electrical steels conforming to this standard minimize energy losses in transformer cores.
- Electromagnetic Devices: Sensors, relays, and actuators benefit from standardized magnetic steel properties for reliability and optimized function.
- Industrial Machinery: Steel strips and sheets fulfilling these specifications support manufacturing equipment requiring precise magnetic characteristics.
- Research and Development: Magnetic material specifications aid in the development of new devices where material performance consistency is critical.
This standard aids manufacturers and purchasers to ensure the selection of steel materials that match electrical and mechanical design demands, facilitating interoperability and uniform quality across international markets.
