IEC 60436:2015 applies to electric dishwashers for household and similar use that are supplied with hot and/or cold water. The object is to state and define the principal performance characteristics of electric dishwashers for household and similar use and to describe the standard methods of measuring these characteristics. This standard is concerned neither with safety nor with minimum performance requirements. This edition constitutes a technical revision and includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Addition of a specification of the reference dishwasher G1222, addition of the microwave oven 752C, inclusion of standby/low power modes and updated cutlery and tableware items. b) Combined cleaning and drying: combining the cleaning and drying performance evaluations into one test, along with the energy and water consumption evaluation, prevents an opportunity for circumvention if tests were performed separately. A dishwasher can detect whether soil is present (cleaning evaluation) or not (drying evaluation) and adjust the cycle to favour performance; combining the tests addresses this. c) New dish load items: new dish load items were incorporated which reflect consumer use. New items are: stainless pots, coffee mugs, melamine plastic items, and glass bowl. The new load items provide different shapes which challenge a dishwasher water spray patterns and provide additional surfaces for soil removal assessment. d) Detergent: a new detergent "D" is specified which mirrors current tablet formulations available on the market. Detergent type D is phosphate free, with percarbonate instead of perborate bleach and more active enzymes. e) Repeatability and reproducibility improvements. f) Addition of annexes for the evaluation of soil sensing programmes, rinsing performance, dishwasher filtration and of an annex on the inlet water temperature influence on energy consumption. The contents of the corrigendum of September 2020 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60436:2015 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies methods for measuring the performance of electric dishwashers for household and similar uses. This standard applies to dishwashers supplied with hot and/or cold water and focuses on defining principal performance characteristics along with standardized test methods. It is important to note that the standard addresses performance evaluation only, not safety requirements or minimum performance thresholds. The 2015 edition includes significant technical revisions such as the incorporation of a reference dishwasher, updated test load items, and new detergent formulations.
Key Topics
-
Performance Characteristics
The standard outlines key performance parameters including cleaning efficiency, drying effectiveness, energy consumption, water usage, and cycle times. -
Combined Cleaning and Drying Tests
IEC 60436:2015 introduces a combined test procedure for cleaning and drying performance to avoid circumvention by cycle adjustments. Dishwashers are evaluated under conditions where soil presence detection and cycle modifications do not bias results. -
Test Load Composition
New dish load items such as stainless steel pots, coffee mugs, melamine plastic items, and glass bowls better simulate actual household usage, challenging dishwasher spray patterns and soil removal capabilities. -
Soiling Methods
Detailed procedures for applying soils like milk, tea, minced meat, egg, oat flakes, spinach, and margarine ensure consistent contamination for performance evaluation. -
Detergent Specification
A new phosphate-free detergent "D" with percarbonate bleach and enhanced enzymes reflects modern market formulations, enabling realistic testing conditions. -
Repeatability and Reproducibility
Improvements in these areas enhance the reliability of test results between laboratories and over time. -
Additional Annexes
Includes evaluation methods for soil sensing programs, rinsing performance, filter systems, and the impact of inlet water temperature on energy consumption.
Applications
-
Household Dishwasher Manufacturers
Use IEC 60436:2015 test methods to verify and demonstrate the cleaning and drying performance, energy efficiency, and water consumption of new models under standardized testing conditions. -
Product Certification and Labeling
Reference for third-party testing laboratories in certifying dishwashers for compliance with energy and environmental labeling programs internationally. -
Consumer Information
Provides transparent and comparable performance data to inform consumer choice and support marketing claims related to dishwasher efficiency and effectiveness. -
Research & Development
Supports innovation by providing a consistent methodology to assess technical improvements, such as new detergents, sensor technologies, or cycle optimizations. -
Regulatory Bodies
Facilitates the formulation of guidelines and regulations around household dishwasher performance metrics without covering safety aspects.
Related Standards
-
IEC 60335 Series
Covers safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, complementing the performance focus of IEC 60436. -
ISO 25197
May provide additional methodologies or environmental testing parameters pertinent to dishwashers. -
Energy Labeling Directives and Standards
Regional and international performance tests that incorporate or reference IEC 60436 to harmonize energy and water consumption reporting. -
Water Quality and Testing Standards
Define parameters for water hardness, temperature, and quality used in dishwasher performance assessments.
Conclusion
IEC 60436:2015 is an essential standard for stakeholders in the electric dishwasher industry, offering precise and harmonized methods to evaluate cleaning efficiency, drying performance, and resource consumption. By implementing this standard, manufacturers and testing bodies ensure transparent, repeatable, and fair assessment of dishwasher capabilities, aiding innovation, compliance, and consumer confidence worldwide.
