Abstract
Overview
IEC 60512-15-2:2018 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under Technical Committee 48, focusing on connectors for electrical and electronic equipment. This standard specifies a mechanical test method-Test 15b-that evaluates the axial retention strength of the connector insert within its housing. It is designed to assess the ability of connector inserts to withstand axial forces typical in normal usage, such as the maximum insertion and withdrawal forces applied during mating and unmating processes.
This edition, published in 2018, revises the 2008 first edition by introducing a new pressure-based test method for hermetic connectors along with alignment to IEC 60512-1-101 framework specifications. The standard ensures reliability and safety in connector performance across a broad range of electrical and electronic applications.
Key Topics
- Axial Insert Retention Test: Provides a standardized test method to verify that connectors maintain insert retention without dislodgement under axial forces.
- Test Methods:
- Method A (Force Application): Applies axial force at a constant rate (25 mm/min) in both insertion and extraction directions, maintaining the specified force for 1 minute.
- Method B (Pressure Application): A newly added test for hermetic connectors that applies gas or air pressure at 5 kPa/s, maintaining it for 1 minute while ensuring safety precautions against potential ejection of components.
- Specimen Preparation and Mounting: Requires careful preparation of connector specimens consistent with product-specific details, including wiring conditions and mounting setups.
- Preconditioning and Recovery: Allows for conditioning specimens prior to testing and recovery afterward as specified by product requirements to simulate real-use environments.
- Measurements and Visual Examination: Involves displacement measurements during and after force/pressure application alongside rigorous visual inspections to detect any retention failure or damage.
- Safety Considerations: Especially essential when using pressure tests, to mitigate risks due to high-velocity ejection of contacts or inserts.
Applications
IEC 60512-15-2:2018 is crucial for manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance professionals in industries where connector integrity and reliability under mechanical stresses are paramount. It applies to:
- Electrical and electronic connectors used in industrial automation, automotive electronics, aerospace systems, telecommunication equipment, and consumer electronics.
- Evaluation of connector assemblies during product development, certification, and quality control phases.
- Testing of hermetic connectors where sealed environments require pressure-based axial retention assessment.
- Ensuring safety and performance compliance for connectors subjected to frequent mating cycles with high insertion/extraction forces.
- Supporting product specifications and contractual agreements requiring standardized mechanical endurance validations.
Related Standards
