IEC 60512-99-002:2019 is used for testing connectors within the scope of SC 48B that are used in twisted pair communication cabling with remote power, such as ISO/IEC 11801 Class D (or better), balanced cabling in support of IEEE Std 802.3bt™, (PoE Plus – Power over Ethernet Plus). The object of this document is to detail a test schedule to determine the ability of pairs of connectors to withstand a sequence of tests with a total of 100 engagements and separations. The electrical current is passed through the connectors during the separation (unmating) step only, in accordance with IEC 60512-9-3. Keywords: Connectors, Engaging and Separating connectors
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60512-99-002:2019 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies endurance test schedules for connectors used in electrical and electronic equipment. This particular part, titled "Test 99b: Test schedule for unmating under electrical load," focuses on assessing the durability of connectors during unmating-disengaging the connectors-while electrical current is flowing. It addresses connectors within the scope of Subcommittee 48B (SC 48B), particularly those used in twisted pair communication cabling with remote power capabilities, such as those compliant with ISO/IEC 11801 Class D or higher and related to IEEE Std 802.3bt™ (PoE Plus - Power over Ethernet Plus).
This test simulates a real-world condition where connectors might be unmated while powered, an event recognized as a misuse but one that may occur in practice. The test schedule involves repeated engagement and separation cycles under electrical load to evaluate connector robustness and safety.
Key Topics
-
Test Objective: To determine whether pairs of connectors can withstand 100 cycles of mating and unmating when electrical current is applied during the separation phase only.
-
Scope and Application: The test is designed for connectors used in balanced twisted pair communication cabling supporting remote powering technologies such as PoE Plus (Power over Ethernet Plus).
-
Test Circuit and Requirements: The test applies a specific current and voltage corresponding to the operational conditions defined for powered communication cabling. The electrical load is applied only during the unmating process, aligning with IEC 60512-9-3 standards.
-
Specimen Preparation: Test specimens consist of mated connector pairs terminated with cables of specified maximum conductor size and length to replicate realistic connection conditions.
-
Endurance Testing: The schedule includes initial mechanical operation cycles, corrosion exposure via flowing mixed gas, and final operation cycles under load to comprehensively assess connector endurance.
-
Non-Normative Application: Because not all connectors will experience electrical load during unmating, this test is considered optional and serves as a verification tool rather than a mandatory requirement for all connectors.
Applications
IEC 60512-99-002:2019 is especially critical for manufacturers, designers, and testing laboratories working with connectors that:
-
Support Power over Ethernet (PoE) technologies, including PoE Plus as defined by IEEE Std 802.3bt™, ensuring connectors can safely handle power delivery during connection and disconnection.
-
Are integrated in twisted pair balanced cabling systems conforming to ISO/IEC 11801 Class D or better, commonly used in modern data communication networks.
-
Require validation for robust mechanical and electrical endurance to prevent failures during practical use, such as unexpected disconnections under load.
By complying with this standard, stakeholders can mitigate risks related to connector damage, electrical hazards, and service interruptions in network infrastructure supporting remote power feeding.
Related Standards
IEC 60512-99-002:2019 is part of the broader IEC 60512 series, which covers tests and measurements for connectors in electrical and electronic equipment. Key related standards include:
-
IEC 60512-9-3: Endurance tests for mechanical operations with electrical load, which defines the test conditions for applying current during mating and unmating.
-
IEC 60512-99-001: Test schedule for engaging and separating connectors with electrical load under similar conditions, focusing on different connector types.
-
ISO/IEC 11801: Generic cabling standards for customer premises, addressing balanced twisted pair cabling specifications.
-
IEC 60512-11-7: Climatic tests including flowing mixed gas corrosion to simulate environmental stresses affecting connectors.
-
TIA standards (TIA-568-A/B.2 and TSB-184-A): Provide telecommunications cabling requirements and guidelines for supporting power delivery over balanced twisted-pair cabling.
Adherence to these interrelated standards ensures comprehensive performance validation, safety, and interoperability of electrical connectors in powered communication environments.
By implementing the IEC 60512-99-002:2019 test schedule, manufacturers and testing facilities deliver confidence in connector performance under critical electrical loading scenarios, safeguarding modern network infrastructures reliant on PoE and similar technologies. This standard plays a vital role in establishing reliable, durable connectors for evolving electrical and electronic equipment markets.
