IEC 60534-2-4:2009 applies to all types of industrial-process control valves. It defines how to state typical control valve inherent flow characteristics and inherent rangeabilities. It also defines how to establish criteria for adherence to manufacturer-stated flow characteristics. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are: - update the normative references; - delete the terminology included in IEC 60534-1; - transform the previous Note 1 in Clause 6; - redraw the graphics; - delete the previous Figure 3.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60534-2-4:2009, titled "Industrial-process control valves - Part 2-4: Flow capacity - Inherent flow characteristics and rangeability", is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard applies to all types of industrial-process control valves and defines the methods for stating typical inherent flow characteristics and rangeabilities. Additionally, it specifies criteria for adherence to manufacturer-stated flow characteristics, ensuring reliable and standardized valve performance data for end users and manufacturers alike. This second edition incorporates technical revisions, such as updates to normative references, removal of previously included terminology, and enhancements to graphical representations.
Key Topics
-
Inherent Flow Characteristics
- Describes how control valves behave under fixed conditions, independent of pipeline effects.
- Provides standard methods for presenting and stating typical flow characteristics, such as linear and equal percentage types.
- Offers graphical and tabular representation requirements at specified valve positions.
-
Inherent Rangeability
- Defines rangeability as the ratio of the largest to the smallest flow coefficient within acceptable deviation limits.
- Stipulates criteria for calculating and stating rangeability based solely on valve internal design, not on field installation conditions.
- Reminds users that installed rangeability may be affected by actuator performance and piping arrangement.
-
Criteria for Manufacturer Adherence
- Outlines permissible deviations between tested valve characteristics and those stated by manufacturers.
- Specifies allowable flow coefficient and slope deviations based on standardized test methods.
- Encourages consistency in performance data, aiding selection and specification for end users.
Applications
IEC 60534-2-4 is essential for industries involved in process automation, fluid handling, and process control, such as:
-
Process Plant Design and Engineering
- Enables engineers to select control valves that meet precise flow control requirements, improving system stability and efficiency.
- Facilitates clear communication between manufacturers and end-users regarding valve performance.
-
Valve Manufacturing and Testing
- Ensures manufacturers present flow characteristics and rangeability data that meet internationally recognized criteria.
- Helps quality assurance teams verify compliance with recognized testing and reporting methods.
-
Procurement and Specification
- Provides procurement specialists and designers with standardized definitions for flow coefficients, travel, and rangeability.
- Minimizes risk of misapplication and facilitates harmonized documentation across multinational projects.
-
Operations and Maintenance
- Assists maintenance engineers and operators to anticipate real-world valve behavior based on inherent flow characteristics.
- Supports troubleshooting and performance optimization by establishing clear expectations for valve behavior.

Practical Value
By following the requirements and guidelines in IEC 60534-2-4:2009, organizations ensure control valves are specified, tested, and documented using uniform international standards. This enables:
- Reliable and comparable valve performance data
- Informed selection and procurement of process control valves
- Improved system safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance
- Greater cooperation and communication among manufacturers, engineers, and end users regarding industrial valve performance
In summary, IEC 60534-2-4 supports consistent, high-quality control valve application and contributes directly to improved process reliability across a wide range of industries.
