Specifies procedures to verify the assumption of a constant failure rate or constant failure intensity as defined in IEC 60050(191). These procedures are applicable whenever it is necessary to verify these assumptions. This may be due to a requirement or for the purpose of assessing the behaviour in time of the failure rate or the failure intensity. The major technical changes with respect to the previous edition concern the inclusion of corrected formulae for tests previously included in a corrigendum, and the addition of new methods for the analysis of multiple items.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60605-6:2007 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that outlines rigorous procedures for equipment reliability testing. Specifically, Part 6 of this standard provides methods for verifying the validity of the assumption of a constant failure rate or constant failure intensity, as referenced in IEC 60050(191). These methods are crucial for organizations seeking to scientifically analyze and improve the reliability of electrical, electronic, and related equipment. The standard is widely used in dependability engineering and product lifecycle management.
Key Topics
- Failure Rate Consistency: Defines statistical and graphical techniques to check if the failure rate of non-repaired items remains constant over time. This is essential for validating claims of predictable reliability.
- Failure Intensity Analysis: Offers tools for evaluating the failure intensity in repaired items, which includes monitoring the intervals between successive failures to determine if trends exist.
- Numerical and Graphical Methods: Incorporates both calculative statistical tests and intuitive graphical procedures such as probability plots, total time on test plots (TTT), hazard plots, and M(t) analysis.
- Multiple Item Analysis: The latest edition adds methods for analyzing reliability data from multiple items, addressing field and laboratory scenarios.
- Requirements: Sets out minimum data requirements (number of failures or failure intervals) for statistical validity, as well as guidance on how to proceed if the constant failure assumption is not met.
- Result Interpretation: Helps users distinguish between truly random failure behavior and trends caused by wear-out, early failures, or mixed failure populations.
Applications
- Product Reliability Assessment: Manufacturers and reliability engineers use IEC 60605-6 to validate whether their equipment or systems demonstrate a predictable, constant failure rate or failure intensity. This is critical before making formal reliability claims or warranties.
- Quality Assurance Programs: Testing for constant failure rate/intensity allows organizations to benchmark product consistency, identify design issues, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Field Data Evaluation: The standard supports analysis based on both test lab results and real-world operational data, making it relevant for ongoing maintenance and service operations.
- Regulatory and Contractual Compliance: Many contracts and regulations require proof of reliable performance based on recognized standards such as IEC 60605-6, especially in sectors like energy, transportation, medical devices, and telecommunications.
- Root Cause Analysis: If a constant failure rate is not observed, the methods facilitate further investigations, such as distinguishing between early-life failures, wear-out phenomena, or non-homogeneous populations within equipment fleets.
Related Standards
- IEC 60050(191): Provides key definitions and terminology related to dependability and quality of service, referenced throughout IEC 60605-6.
- IEC 61649: Focuses on reliability testing for non-repaired items, helpful if wear-out or early failures are detected.
- IEC 61710: Applicable for the statistical evaluation of repaired items, complementing failure intensity tests.
- IEC 60300 Series: Broader guidance on dependability management and related testing protocols.
- ISO/IEC 17025: General requirements for testing and calibration laboratories, for organizations seeking accredited laboratory results.
IEC 60605-6:2007 stands as a foundational document for professionals conducting reliability testing and analysis, ensuring that product reliability is validated with internationally accepted statistical rigor. Its procedures help organizations enhance product quality, meet contractual requirements, and strengthen marketplace credibility by adopting proven reliability assurance methodologies.
