IEC 60664-1:2007 Deals with insulation coordination for equipment within low-voltage systems. It applies to equipment for use up to 2 000 m above sea level having a rated voltage up to a.c. 1 000 V with rated frequencies up to 30 kHz, or a rated voltage up to d.c. 1 500 V. It specifies the requirements for clearances, creepage distances and solid insulation for equipment based upon their performance criteria. It includes methods of electric testing with respect to insulation coordination. The minimum clearances specified in this standard do not apply where ionized gases occur. Special requirements for such situations may be specified at the discretion of the relevant technical committee. This standard does not deal with distances: - through liquid insulation, - through gases other than air, - through compressed air. Main changes have been made with respect to the previous edition: - Amendment of Japanese mains conditions with regard to the rated impulse voltages, the rationalized voltages and the nominal voltages of supply systems for different modes of overvoltage control - Amendment of dimensioning of clearances smaller than 0,01 mm - Alignment of the table and the corresponding formula regarding test voltages for verifying clearances at different altitudes - Amendment of interpolation of the creepage distance values for functional insulation - Amendment of creepage distance dimensioning taking into account ribs - Revision of the former Clause 4 "Tests and measurements" (now Clause 6) to achieve a more detailed description of the tests and their purpose, the test equipment and possible alternatives - Change of Annex C "Partial discharge test methods" from a former technical report, Type 2 (now called TS), to a normative Annex C.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60664-1:2007 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the principles, requirements, and tests for insulation coordination of equipment used within low-voltage systems. This standard specifically applies to equipment operating up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC, designed for use at altitudes up to 2,000 meters above sea level. It addresses critical factors such as clearances, creepage distances, and solid insulation, providing guidelines to ensure optimal electrical insulation performance and safety in low-voltage electrical equipment.
Key Topics
-
Insulation Coordination Principles
Explains the coordination between insulation properties and voltage conditions to maintain safety and functionality. This includes long-term voltages, transient overvoltages, recurring peak voltages, and temporary overvoltages. -
Clearances and Creepage Distances
Specifies minimum physical distances between conductive parts to prevent electrical breakdown. Factors affecting these distances include voltage rating, insulation type, environmental pollution, and altitude. -
Types of Insulation
Describes basic, supplementary, and reinforced insulation requirements appropriate for different risk levels and operational conditions. -
Electric Testing Methods
Defines standardized test procedures for verifying insulation strength, including dielectric tests and partial discharge testing to ensure equipment reliability and compliance. -
Environmental Considerations
Addresses the influence of altitude, pollution levels, and electrical frequency on insulation coordination, with specific altitude correction factors and pollution degree classifications. -
Updates and Amendments
The 2007 edition includes significant amendments such as refined dimensioning for clearances smaller than 0.01 mm, revisions on test voltage formulas according to altitude, and improvements in creepage distance calculations including rib influence.
Applications
IEC 60664-1:2007 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and testing laboratories involved with low-voltage electrical equipment such as:
- Industrial automation devices
- Household electrical appliances
- Switchgear and controlgear
- Power supplies and transformers
- Electrical equipment for building installations
By following this standard, professionals ensure equipment safety through proper insulation coordination, reducing risks of electrical shock, short circuits, and material degradation. This leads to increased equipment reliability, compliance with international safety regulations, and enhanced user confidence.
