IEC 60670-1:2024 applies to boxes, enclosures and parts of enclosures (hereafter called "boxes" and "enclosures") for electrical accessories with a rated voltage not exceeding 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC intended for household or similar fixed electrical installations, either indoors or outdoors. Boxes and enclosures complying with this document are suitable for use at ambient temperatures not normally exceeding +40 °C, but their average over a period of 24 h does not exceed +35 °C, with a lower limit of the ambient air temperature of −5 °C. Other temperatures outside the above range can apply according to the classification of the boxes and the enclosures. This document is intended to apply to boxes and enclosures for electrical accessories within the scope of IEC technical committee 23. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2015. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the classifications, markings and tests of boxes and enclosures for use and installation in ambient temperature below normal use are modified; b) the test for the durability of markings is modified; c) a test is added for fixing screws protected by caps; d) a normative annex is added to specify the tests applied to boxes and enclosures declared with an IK code; e) requirements for the resistance to abnormal heat and fire of internal parts not necessary to retain current carrying parts are specified.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60670-1:2024 sets out the general requirements for boxes and enclosures used with electrical accessories for household and similar fixed electrical installations. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard addresses products with rated voltages not exceeding 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC, ensuring their suitability for both indoor and outdoor installations. These requirements are designed to promote safety, reliability, and performance for applications where ambient temperatures typically range between −5 °C and +40 °C, with some flexibility for other classifications.
This third edition of IEC 60670-1 updates and replaces the 2015 edition, introducing technical revisions to enhance the classification, testing, and safety provisions for electrical boxes and enclosures.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: The standard covers boxes, enclosures, and related parts intended for use in fixed electrical installations within domestic and similar environments.
- Classifications: Distinctions are made based on:
- Material type (insulating, metallic, composite, rubber)
- Installation type (flush, semi-flush, surface, hollow wall, ceilings, floors, furniture)
- Types of inlets (sheathed cable, flexible cable, conduit, threaded conduit, other types)
- Cable entry and retention mechanisms (retention, anchorage, clamping)
- Operating temperature ranges during installation and use
- Degree of protection (e.g., IP and IK codes)
- Markings and Identification: Guidance is provided on clear and durable product marking for traceability and end-user safety.
- Testing Requirements: Updated procedures for impact resistance, electric shock protection, resistance to abnormal heat, fire, and ingress of water and solids (IP code), including tests for:
- Durability of markings
- Fixing screws with protective caps
- Mechanical strength under different ambient temperatures
- Resistance to mechanical impacts (IK code)
- Safety and Performance: Ensures boxes and enclosures are reliable in normal use, minimizing safety risks in line with contemporary safety guidelines.
- Exclusions: The standard does not include ceiling roses, luminaire supporting couplers, or products specifically designed for cable trunking and ducting systems compliant with IEC 61084.
Applications
IEC 60670-1:2024 is relevant to manufacturers, installers, and inspectors of electrical systems in residential and similar environments where fixed electrical installations are required. Practical applications include:
- Building and Construction: Ensuring that electrical infrastructure in homes, office buildings, and similar premises complies with international safety and performance standards.
- Product Design and Manufacturing: Serving as a benchmark for manufacturers of electrical accessories to design robust, safe, and compliant enclosures and boxes for a variety of installation types and environmental exposures.
- Compliance and Certification: Assisting regulatory authorities, testing laboratories, and certification bodies in assessing conformance of products to harmonized international criteria.
- Maintenance and Inspection: Providing the foundation for safe installation, ongoing maintenance, and periodic inspection of fixed electrical installations.
By governing aspects such as ingress protection, electrical insulation, fire resistance, and clear classification, IEC 60670-1 supports safe and durable electrical installations worldwide.
Related Standards
When working with or referencing IEC 60670-1:2024, it is also important to consider the following related standards and documents, which address complementary requirements for electrical accessories and installations:
- IEC 60529: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
- IEC 62262: Degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts (IK Code)
- IEC 60695 Series: Fire hazard testing methods
- IEC 61140: Protection against electric shock
- IEC 60423: Conduit systems for cable management
- IEC 61032: Protection of persons and equipment by enclosures - Probes for verification
For a comprehensive approach to electrical safety and performance, always ensure harmonization with all relevant IEC standards within the scope of fixed installations and electrical accessories.
