IEC 60684-3-116:2010 gives the requirements for two types of general purpose, flexible, flame retarded, heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving. This sleeving has been found suitable for use at temperatures up to 125 °C. - Type A - Highly flame retarded - Type B - Flame retarded This edition has been aligned with UL 224 for 125 °C flexible heat-shrinkable polyolefin tubing.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60684-3-209:2010 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for general purpose, flexible, flame-retarded, heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving. This sleeving is designed for electrical insulating applications and is suitable for use at temperatures up to 125 °C. The standard defines two types of sleeving based on flame retardancy levels:
- Type A: Highly flame retarded
- Type B: Flame retarded
This edition aligns with UL 224 standards for 125 °C flexible heat-shrinkable polyolefin tubing, ensuring broad compatibility and industry acceptance for electrical insulating materials.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
- Covers flexible insulating sleeving made from heat-shrinkable polyolefin materials.
- Suitable for electrical insulation and protection in environments requiring flame retardancy.
- Suitable for operating temperatures up to 125 °C.
- Available in bore sizes up to 75 mm.
- Available in multiple colors including black, brown, white, red, yellow, green, blue, orange, violet, grey, and yellow/green.
Specifications and Testing Requirements
- Test conditions: Sleeving samples undergo heat treatment at 200 °C for 5 minutes to simulate shrinking before testing.
- Physical properties: Includes minimum wall thickness, shrink ratios (2:1 and 3:1), recovered internal diameters, and concentricity.
- Mechanical properties: Tensile strength minimum of 10.3 MPa and elongation at break minimum of 200%.
- Electrical properties: Minimum breakdown voltage of 2.5 kV and volume resistivity above 10^12 Ω·m at 23 °C.
- Flame retardance: Time of burning limited to a maximum of 60 seconds with no ignition of a cotton indicator flag, using different flame propagation test methods for Types A and B.
- Durability tests: Includes heat aging at 160 °C, corrosion resistance, low temperature bend tests (-30 °C), and heat shock resistance (250 °C).
- Mandrel diameters: Defines specific mandrel sizes for heat shock and bending tests depending on sleeving diameter.
Designation Format
Sleeving samples are designated using the IEC 60684 structure:
Sleeving [IEC 60684](/search?q=IEC%2060684) -3 -209 [Type] -[Expanded diameter]/[Recovered diameter] - [Color code]
Example:
Sleeving [IEC 60684-3-209](/search?q=IEC%2060684-3-209) A-12,7/6,4-BK (Type A, 12.7 mm expanded diameter, 6.4 mm recovered diameter, Black)
Applications
IEC 60684-3-209 compliant heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving is used extensively in:
- Electrical wiring and cable insulation for industrial, automotive, and consumer electronic devices.
- Protection of splices, terminations, and connections in wiring harnesses.
- Enhanced fire safety insulation in electrical panels, control cabinets, and appliances.
- Environments requiring reliable thermal, mechanical, and chemical resistance properties.
- Color coding and identification of wiring for easier maintenance and safety management.
The flame retardant and heat shrink characteristics make this sleeving ideal for electrical safety and insulation needs in complex wiring systems subjected to temperature fluctuations and fire risk.
