IEC 60684-3-212:2005 standard gives the requirements for four types of heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleevings suitable for use at temperatures up to 135 °C. Type A: flame retarded, shrink ratio 2:1, Type B: not flame retarded, shrink ratio 2:1, Type C: flame retarded, shrink ratio 3:1, Type D: not flame retarded shrink ratio 3:1. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant changes with regards to the previous edition: Replacement of the thermal endurance test method according to IEC 60216 with a long term ageing test, i.e. 3 000 h at the recommended maximum temperature found suitable for use, to provide safe thermal test data within a workable time scale. Key words: heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleevings
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60684-3-212:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleevings used as flexible electrical insulation. The standard applies to four primary types of sleeving, all suitable for use at continuous temperatures up to 135 °C. These products are vital for providing mechanical protection, environmental sealing, and electrical insulation for wiring, components, and connections in various electrical and electronic applications.
This second edition introduces significant updates, including the replacement of the thermal endurance test from the previous edition with a long-term ageing test that simulates 3,000 hours of service at maximum recommended temperatures. This change delivers more reliable thermal data within a practical timeframe.
Key words: heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleevings, electrical insulation, IEC 60684.
Key Topics
-
Types and Properties:
- Type A: Flame retarded, 2:1 shrink ratio
- Type B: Not flame retarded, 2:1 shrink ratio
- Type C: Flame retarded, 3:1 shrink ratio
- Type D: Not flame retarded, 3:1 shrink ratio
-
Performance Requirements:
- Designed for safe, long-term operation at temperatures up to 135 °C.
- Ensures mechanical strength, electrical insulation, and resistance to heat, fluids, abrasion, and fungus.
-
Testing and Compliance:
- Long-term ageing test at 135 °C for 3,000 hours
- Dimensional and property conformance checks (e.g., tensile strength, elongation at break, breakdown voltage)
- Resistance to fluids, water absorption, and color fastness to light
-
Identification and Marking:
- Sleeving is designated by IEC part, sheet, type, size (expanded/recovered diameter), and color in alignment with IEC color codes.
Applications
Heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleevings standardized by IEC 60684-3-212:2005 are extensively used in:
- Electrical and Electronic Equipment: Providing reliable insulation and strain relief for wire harnesses, terminals, and joint connections.
- Automotive and Aerospace: Protecting cables and components from abrasion, chemicals, and extreme thermal conditions.
- Telecommunications: Sealing and insulating connections in both indoor and outdoor installations.
- Industrial Machinery: Bundling, protecting, and color-coding cables, as well as offering resistance to oils, fuels, and other fluids.
- Consumer Electronics: Insulating and aesthetically finishing wire assemblies.
Using products that comply with this standard ensures consistent quality, safety, and compatibility in a wide range of insulation and protection scenarios where heat-shrink tubing is essential.
Related Standards
To achieve full compliance and best practices in usage, IEC 60684-3-212:2005 should be considered alongside these related international standards:
- IEC 60684-1: Definitions and general requirements for flexible insulating sleeving
- IEC 60684-2: Methods of test for flexible insulating sleeving
- IEC 60757: Code for designation of colors
- ISO 846: Plastics - Evaluation of the action of microorganisms (fungus resistance)
- ISO 1817: Rubber, vulcanized - Determination of the effect of liquids (fluid resistance)
Adherence to IEC 60684-3-212:2005 and related standards ensures optimal performance, safety, and interoperability in electrical insulation applications involving heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving.
