Gives the requirements for one type of heat-shrinkable, flame retarded, with a nominal shrink ratio 2:1, fluid resistant polyvinylidene fluoride sleeving for use at temperatures up to 175 C. This sleeving is normally supplied with an internal diameter up to 25,4 mm, and the standard colour is transparent. Sizes or colours other than those specifically listed in this standard may be available as custom items. These items are considered to comply with this standard if they comply with the property requirements listed in Tables 2, 3, 4 and 5, with the exception of dimensions and mass. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone. This edition includes the following significant technical change with regard to the previous edition: Replacement of the thermal endurance test method according to IEC 60216 with a long term ageing test, i.e. 3 000 h at the recommended maximum temperature found suitable for use,in order to provide safe thermal test data within a workable time scale.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60684-3-228:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifying requirements for a specific type of flexible insulating sleeving. This standard applies to heat-shrinkable, semi-rigid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) sleeving that is flame retardant, fluid resistant, and features a nominal shrink ratio of 2:1. Designed for use in demanding electrical applications, this sleeving can withstand temperatures up to 175 °C, making it suitable for environments requiring high thermal endurance.
The standard primarily specifies sleeving with internal diameters up to 25.4 mm, typically provided in a transparent color. Custom sizes and colors are also available and are considered compliant if they meet the prescribed material property requirements, excluding dimensions and mass. A key technical update in this 2004 edition replaced the previous thermal endurance test with a long-term aging test lasting 3,000 hours at the maximum recommended operating temperature, thereby providing reliable thermal testing within a practical timeframe.
Key Topics
- Material Specification: The sleeving is made from semi-rigid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), known for excellent chemical resistance and mechanical stability.
- Heat-Shrinkable Properties: Designed with a shrink ratio of 2:1, enabling the sleeving to reduce to half its original diameter when heat is applied, ensuring a tight and secure fit over cables and components.
- Flame Retardance: The sleeving meets flame retardant criteria to enhance safety and reduce fire risks in electrical installations.
- Fluid Resistance: Provides robust protection against exposure to various fluids, improving durability and operational longevity in harsh environments.
- Thermal Endurance: Rated for continuous use at temperatures up to 175 °C, suitable for high-temperature applications.
- Testing Methods: Includes adherence to specific IEC testing procedures, with the long-term aging test replacing traditional thermal endurance tests for better accuracy and real-world relevance.
- Compliance and Customization: While the standard defines specific dimensions and properties, it allows for custom-sized sleeving and different colors, provided they comply with performance requirements.
Applications
IEC 60684-3-228 sleeving is essential for industries and environments where reliable electrical insulation with high resistance to heat, flame, and fluids is critical. Key application areas include:
- Electrical and Electronic Wiring: Protecting cables and wires in control panels, electrical equipment, and circuits exposed to high temperatures.
- Aerospace and Automotive: Use in wiring harnesses where flame retardance and fluid resistance are mandatory for safety and durability.
- Industrial Equipment: Insulating components in machines and devices subject to aggressive fluids and high thermal exposure.
- Telecommunications: Securing sensitive cables and connectors against environmental hazards.
- Renewable Energy: Ensuring reliability in solar or wind power installations where environmental resistance is critical.
Related Standards
For comprehensive application and testing, IEC 60684-3-228 interacts with several related IEC and ISO standards:
- IEC 60684-1: General definitions and requirements for flexible insulating sleeving.
- IEC 60684-2: Methods of testing flexible insulating sleeving.
- IEC 60216: Thermal endurance testing methods (previously referenced, now replaced by long-term ageing tests).
- IEC 60757: Color coding for identification of cables and wires.
- ISO 846: Methods for evaluating the effects of microorganisms on plastics.
- ISO 1817: Assessment of resistance to liquids for vulcanized rubber, informing fluid resistance parameters.
Adhering to IEC 60684-3-228 ensures that polyvinylidene fluoride heat-shrinkable sleeving used in electrical insulation meets rigorous international standards for safety, fluid resistance, and thermal performance-key for reliable and hazardous environment operations.
