Gives the requirements for one type of heat shrinkable, semi-flexible, polyvinylidene fluoride, flame retarded, fluid resistant sleeving that has been found suitable for use up to temperatures of 150 °C. The nominal shrink ratio is 2:1. This sleeving is normally supplied in bore sizes up to 25,4 mm and is transparent. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone.
Abstract
Overview
The IEC 60684-3-229:2003 standard defines the specifications for a specific type of flexible insulating sleeving. This sleeving is characterized by its heat-shrinkable, semi-flexible construction made from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Key features include its flame retardancy, fluid resistance, and a nominal shrink ratio of 2:1. It is designed for use in electrical insulating applications, with a maximum applicable temperature of up to 150 °C. Typically supplied in transparent form with bore sizes up to 25.4 mm, this sleeving ensures reliable performance in demanding environments.
Key Topics
- Material Composition: Polyvinylidene fluoride offers excellent chemical resistance, mechanical strength, and thermal stability.
- Heat Shrinkable Property: The 2:1 shrink ratio allows the sleeving to shrink to half its original diameter when heated, ensuring tight fitting over cables or components.
- Flame Retardancy: Complies with strict flame resistance requirements to enhance safety in electrical installations.
- Fluid Resistance: Tested for durability against various fluids, enhancing reliability in harsh or chemically aggressive environments.
- Semi-flexible Construction: Provides a balance between flexibility and mechanical protection, suitable for varied installation needs.
- Dimension Specifications: Standard bore sizes up to 25.4 mm, with options for custom dimensions and colors available as special orders.
- Compliance and Testing: Meets established performance levels through rigorous testing such as dimensional accuracy, breakdown voltage, and chemical resistance aligned with IEC 60684 series testing methods.
Applications
IEC 60684-3-229 sleeving is highly suitable for:
- Electrical Insulation: Protecting wires and cable assemblies in electrical devices, ensuring insulation quality under thermal and mechanical stresses.
- Industrial Equipment: Use in chemical, automotive, aerospace, and other industries requiring durable, flame-retardant, and fluid-resistant electrical insulation.
- Harsh Environments: Ideal for environments exposed to oils, chemicals, and elevated temperatures up to 150 °C, preventing degradation and maintaining safety.
- Safety-Critical Systems: Applications where flame retardancy is essential, such as control panels, power distribution units, and transportation systems.
- Customization Needs: Special runs available with non-standard diameters and colors to suit specific project or regulatory requirements.
Related Standards
This standard is part of the IEC 60684 series on flexible insulating sleeving:
- IEC 60684-1: Definitions and general requirements for flexible insulating sleeving.
- IEC 60684-2: Specifies test methods for evaluating sleeving properties.
- IEC 60684-3: Contains sheets specifying individual types of sleeving; IEC 60684-3-229 covers PVDF heat shrink sleeving specifically.
Additional complementary standards referenced include:
- IEC 60757: Color designation codes to assist with sleeving identification.
- ISO 1817: Procedures for testing the effect of liquids on vulcanized rubber, relevant for assessing fluid resistance.
Selecting materials compliant with IEC 60684-3-229 assures users of meeting internationally recognized performance benchmarks in heat-shrinkable sleeving. However, material selection should always be driven by the precise application requirements for temperature, fluid exposure, flame resistance, and mechanical properties to ensure safety and reliability in real-world usage.
