IEC 60684-3-283:2019 gives the requirements for two types of heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving for bus-bar insulation, with a nominal shrink ratio of 2,5:1. This sleeving has been found suitable up to temperatures of 100 °C. Type A: Medium wall - internal diameter up to 170,0 mm typically Type B: Thick wall - internal diameter up to 165,0 mm typically These sleevings are normally supplied in colour, red or brown. Since these types of sleeving cover a significantly large range of sizes and wall thicknesses, Annex A (Tables A.1 and A.2) provides guidance to the range of sizes available. The actual size and wall thickness will be agreed between the user and supplier depending on the electric strength of the installed tubing offered and the requirements of the user. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application will be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2010 and Amendment 1:2013. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - change of moulded plaque thickness for resistance to tracking and weathering tests to (6 ± 0,5) mm. Keywords: Heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving for bus-bar insulation
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60684-3-283:2019 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It specifies the requirements for flexible insulating sleeving, focusing on two types of heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving for bus-bar insulation. These sleeving products are recognized for their suitability in electrical insulation applications up to 100 °C, with a nominal shrink ratio of 2.5:1. Two main types are covered:
- Type A: Medium wall, internal diameter up to 170.0 mm (typically)
- Type B: Thick wall, internal diameter up to 165.0 mm (typically)
The standard includes comprehensive guidelines covering size ranges and wall thicknesses, offering practical direction for manufacturers and users. This 2019 edition reflects updates, including changes related to testing for resistance to tracking and weathering.
Key Topics
Key subject areas covered in IEC 60684-3-283:2019 include:
- Material specifications: Details on heat-shrinkable, polyolefin insulation materials and their expected performance.
- Size and wall thickness guidance: Range of available dimensions, with actual selection to be agreed upon by user and supplier depending on electrical requirements.
- Performance requirements: Criteria such as tensile strength, elongation at break, dielectric strength, resistance to heat ageing, and chemical compatibility.
- Colour identification: Typically supplied in red or brown, with guidance on correct labelling and colour designation in compliance with IEC 60757.
- Testing procedures: Methods for confirming material and product compliance, including oven shrinkage, mechanical, and environmental property evaluations.
- Updated technical details: Notably, updated moulded plaque thickness for certain resistance tests and other technical refinements.
Applications
Practical uses of heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving for bus-bar insulation include:
- Electrical bus-bar insulation: Providing a flexible, robust insulating layer over bus-bars in switchgear, transformers, control panels, and electrical distribution systems.
- Retrofitting and maintenance: Facilitating repairs and upgrades by enabling on-site installation over existing conductors without disassembly.
- Electrical safety compliance: Supporting adherence to regulatory and safety requirements through reliable insulation properties up to 100 °C.
- Custom installations: Allowing selection of specific diameters and wall thicknesses to match diverse bus-bar configurations and operational voltages.
The standard offers clear guidance on how to negotiate size and performance requirements with suppliers to address unique project needs, ensuring that final installations meet both functional and regulatory standards in industrial and commercial applications.
