Gives the requirements for glass textile fibre sleeving, uncoated, constructed from a braid of E-type yarn. The sleeving is annealed by heat treatment to assist in maintaining a circular cross-section. This sleeving is suitable for use at temperatures up to 350 °C. It is normally available in internal diameters between 0,5 mm and 30 mm and is normally supplied in its natural colour. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone.
Abstract
IEC 60684-3-300: Flexible Insulating Sleeving – Glass Textile Fibre Sleeving, Braided, Uncoated
Overview
IEC 60684-3-300:2002 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for flexible insulating sleeving made from braided glass textile fibre, specifically E-type yarn. This sleeving is uncoated and undergoes heat annealing to preserve a circular cross-section. It is designed for high-temperature electrical insulation applications, supporting temperatures up to 350 °C. The standard ensures consistent quality and performance for sleeving used in electrical and electronic purposes, making it crucial for industries requiring reliable insulation under demanding thermal conditions.
Key Topics
- Material Construction: The sleeving is made from braided E-type glass yarn, providing heat resistance and mechanical stability.
- Heat Treatment: Annealing the sleeving maintains its circular profile and dimensional integrity at elevated temperatures.
- Temperature Rating: Suitable for continuous use at temperatures up to 350 °C, making it ideal for high-temperature environments.
- Dimensions and Colors: Normally supplied in internal diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 30 mm and in its natural color. Custom sizes and colors may be available upon request.
- Performance Levels: The sleeving meets established performance criteria in terms of dimensional, mechanical, and thermal properties outlined in the IEC 60684-1 and IEC 60684-2 standards.
- Designation System: Sleeving is designated by a code indicating publication, part, sheet number, nominal internal diameter, colour, and any special property codes as per IEC 60757 colour coding.
Applications
Glass textile fibre sleeving, as defined in IEC 60684-3-300, is widely used in electrical and electronic industries due to its excellent thermal stability and insulation properties:
- High-Temperature Cable Protection: Protects wiring in appliances, electric motors, and control gear where temperatures can reach up to 350 °C.
- Aerospace and Automotive: Insulates wiring harnesses subjected to extreme heat.
- Industrial Equipment: Used in manufacturing plants for wiring insulation exposed to harsh thermal environments.
- Electrical Installations: Ensures safety and reliability in electrical distribution systems prone to elevated temperatures.
- Specialized Customization: With custom diameters and colors, it can be tailored for specific insulation and identification requirements in complex systems.
Related Standards
- IEC 60684-1: Defines general terms and requirements for flexible insulating sleeving.
- IEC 60684-2: Specifies test methods for validating sleeving performance.
- IEC 60757: Provides the colour designation code used for sleeving identification.
- IEC 60068-2-10: Covers environmental testing procedures, including mould growth test relevant to sleeving durability.
Practical Value
Using sleeving compliant with IEC 60684-3-300 ensures:
- Thermal Reliability: Confidence in insulation performance up to 350 °C critical for safety and compliance in electrical components.
- Consistent Dimensions: Improved installation ease and effectiveness due to reliable sleeve sizing and circular cross-section maintained by annealing.
- Material Traceability: Clear designation and colour coding aids quality control and application accuracy.
- International Compliance: Facilitates global trade and uniformity by adhering to a recognized international standard.
Conclusion
IEC 60684-3-300 sets rigorous requirements for glass textile fibre insulating sleeving, enabling manufacturers and users to select appropriate materials for high-temperature insulation needs confidently. By complying with this standard, electrical components gain enhanced durability, safety, and performance in environments where temperature resistance is critical.
