IEC 60695-11-3:2012 provides detailed requirements for the production of either of two 500 W nominal, pre-mixed type test flames. The approximate overall height of each flame is 125 mm. Two methods of producing a test flame are described: - Method A uses methane. - Method C can use either methane or propane. This basic safety publication is intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. This first edition of IEC 60695-11-3 cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC/TS 60695-11-3 published in 2004. It constitutes a technical revision and now has the status of an International Standard. The main changes with respect to the second edition of IEC/TS 60695-11-3 are the integration of minor editorial and technical changes throughout the text. Keywords: Fire hazard, Test flames, 500 W flames
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60695-11-3:2012 is a fundamental international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for fire hazard testing. This standard specifies the requirements for the production, apparatus, and confirmation methods of two types of 500 W nominal pre-mixed test flames, which are primarily used to evaluate the fire hazard of electrotechnical products. The publication serves as a reference for technical committees and helps ensure consistent fire testing methodologies worldwide in accordance with established safety guidelines.
Key aspects of IEC 60695-11-3:2012 include:
- Methods for generating standardized 500 W test flames
- Use of methane (Method A) or methane/propane (Method C) as fuel gases
- Detailed specifications for the apparatus, flame dimensions, testing environment, and calibration procedures
By following this standard, organizations can ensure reliable and reproducible fire hazard testing, supporting global safety harmonization in electrical and electronic product design and assessment.
Key Topics
-
Test Flame Production Methods
IEC 60695-11-3 describes two distinct methods:- Method A: Uses methane gas with existing hardware to produce a 500 W flame of approximately 125 mm height.
- Method C: Uses non-adjustable hardware and can utilize either methane or propane gas, also yielding a 125 mm flame.
-
Apparatus and Setup
The standard outlines:- Requirements for burner design, gas flowmeters, and control valves
- Use of a 9 mm diameter copper block and precise thermocouple for temperature recording
- Configuration of laboratory fumehood or chamber to maintain safe, controlled testing conditions
-
Confirmational Test Procedures
- Procedures to ensure the produced flame meets the time and temperature profiles required for standardization (e.g., heating a copper block from 100 °C to 700 °C in 54 ± 2 seconds)
- Details for periodic verification and calibration
-
Safety and Consistency
- All procedures are aligned with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51, promoting basic safety publication principles in new and existing standards.
Applications
IEC 60695-11-3:2012 is widely applied by manufacturers, testing laboratories, and standardization committees for:
-
Fire Hazard Assessment of Electrotechnical Products
Ensuring that materials and products meet stringent fire safety requirements before market release. -
Development of Product and Industry Standards
Providing technical committees with a harmonized foundation to build fire testing criteria into broader standards. -
Quality Assurance in Manufacturing
Offering a repeatable and validated method for in-house fire hazard testing. -
Regulatory Compliance
Assisting organizations in meeting international safety regulations governing electrical, electronic, and related technologies.
This standard is particularly relevant for industries such as:
- Electrical and electronics manufacturing
- Product certification and conformity assessment
- Research and development of flame-retardant materials
Related Standards
For comprehensive fire hazard testing and alignment with best practices, IEC 60695-11-3:2012 is often used alongside other standards in the IEC 60695 series, including:
