IEC 60704-2-1:2014 applies to electrical vacuum cleaners (including their accessories and their component parts) for household use in or under conditions similar to those in households. This part of IEC 60704 applies as it is to electrical vacuum cleaners operating in dry conditions. Some additions and modifications for vacuum cleaners operating in wet conditions are under consideration. How to test robotic vacuum cleaners is under consideration for a future edition. This part of IEC 60704 does not apply to vacuum cleaners for industrial or professional purposes. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2000. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) introduction of a measuring method on hard floors; b) inclusion of values for measurement uncertainty; c) inclusion of values for standard deviation for declaration and verification; d) update of the definition of the standard test carpet. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60704-1:2010.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60704-2-1:2014 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies test codes for determining airborne acoustical noise in household vacuum cleaners. This standard is a part of the IEC 60704 series focused on measuring noise emissions from electrical appliances to ensure reliable and comparable acoustic performance data. IEC 60704-2-1 specifically addresses vacuum cleaners operating in dry conditions for household and similar environments, excluding industrial or professional use.
The third edition of this standard, published in 2014, updates previous versions by introducing precise measurement methods on hard floors, defining measurement uncertainty values, and updating standard carpet definitions used during testing.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
IEC 60704-2-1 covers electrical vacuum cleaners including accessories and component parts designed for household use or under conditions similar to households. It applies primarily to dry-condition vacuum cleaners while wet-condition and robotic vacuum cleaners testing guidelines are under consideration for future editions. Industrial vacuum cleaners fall outside the scope. -
Test Methods for Airborne Noise Measurement
The standard aligns with ISO measurement methods (ISO 3743-1, ISO 3743-2, and ISO 3744) to determine sound power levels emitted by vacuum cleaners, depending on appliance size and test environments. The recent edition adds a specific measuring procedure for hard floor surfaces alongside carpets. -
Measurement Uncertainty and Standard Deviation
To ensure accuracy and reproducibility, IEC 60704-2-1 includes statistical data on measurement uncertainty as well as standard deviation for noise level declarations and verification. This promotes consistency between different laboratories performing vacuum cleaner noise tests. -
Test Conditions and Equipment
The standard details conditions for pre-conditioning appliances, electrical supply requirements, instrumentation for sound measurement, and the use of a specified standard test carpet. It supplements and modifies the general provisions outlined in IEC 60704-1:2010. -
Data Reporting and Interpretation
Clear requirements on information to be recorded during testing and how to report sound pressure and power levels are included, ensuring clarity for manufacturers, regulators, and consumers regarding acoustic performance.
Applications
IEC 60704-2-1:2014 serves a vital role in:
-
Product Development and Quality Assurance
Manufacturers of household vacuum cleaners use these standardized test codes during product design and quality control to measure and improve noise emissions, ensuring compliance with regulatory and market requirements. -
Regulatory Compliance
Ensures vacuum cleaners meet national or international noise regulations, particularly where noise labeling or limits are mandated to protect consumers and reduce noise pollution in domestic settings. -
Consumer Information and Marketing
Provides reliable noise emission data that can be included in product specifications, helping consumers make informed decisions based on appliance acoustical performance. -
Laboratory Testing and Certification
Test laboratories leverage these guidelines to perform reproducible and comparable noise measurements, forming the basis for certification and performance validation.
