IEC 60704-2-1:2026 specifies the determination of airborne acoustical noise of mains operated and cordless dry vacuum cleaners including their accessories and docking stations for household use or under conditions similar to those in households. For wet and dry vacuum cleaners, the dry cleaning function applies. The wet cleaning function is measured in accordance with IEC 60704-2-20. Particular requirements for floor cleaning robots are specified in IEC 60704-2-17 . This document describes the determination of the noise emission of dry vacuum cleaners under normal operating conditions on carpet and hard floor in accordance with IEC 62885-2. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2020. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment with IEC 60704 1:2021; b) addressing consumer relevant testing aspects; c) robustness of standards and closing potential loopholes d) enlarged scope to include noise measurement on docking stations. This document is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 60704-1:2021, Household and similar electrical appliances - Test code for the determination of airborne acoustical noise - Part 1: General requirements.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60704-2-1:2026 is the fifth edition of the international standard that specifies the test code for determining the airborne acoustical noise of household and similar electrical appliances, particularly focusing on dry vacuum cleaners. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard applies to both mains operated and cordless dry vacuum cleaners, including their accessories and docking stations, designed for use in the home or environments similar to households. The document provides precise test procedures for measuring the noise emitted by these appliances under real-world operating conditions on both carpets and hard floors, enabling consistent and accurate noise measurement reporting.
This edition brings key updates and aligns with the latest IEC 60704-1:2021 general requirements. It also expands the scope to include docking stations, incorporates robust provisions to improve reliability, and addresses consumer-relevant testing aspects.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Applicability
- Applies to mains operated and cordless dry vacuum cleaners for home use, including accessories and docking stations.
- For wet and dry vacuum cleaners, only the dry function is covered; noise from the wet cleaning function is measured per IEC 60704-2-20.
- Does not cover requirements specific to floor cleaning robots or wet cleaning functions, which are addressed in related IEC standards.
-
Noise Measurement Conditions
- Measurements are conducted under normal operating conditions, simulating actual household use.
- Vacuum cleaners are tested on both standard carpet (Wilton) and reference hard floor surfaces to ensure accurate representation of real-world usage.
-
Test Methodology
- Incorporates both direct and comparison methods for noise evaluation.
- Specifies microphone placement, equipment setup, and operator guidelines to minimize variability and enhance repeatability of results.
-
Technical Updates in the 2026 Edition
- Alignment with IEC 60704-1:2021 for general acoustical noise testing.
- Procedures strengthened to address potential loopholes and improve the robustness of noise emission declarations.
- Introduction of noise measurement protocols for docking stations, facilitating a more comprehensive acoustic profile.
Applications
Implementing IEC 60704-2-1:2026 delivers multiple advantages for manufacturers, testing laboratories, regulators, and consumers:
-
Product Development and Design
- Enables appliance manufacturers to objectively assess and reduce the noise emissions of vacuum cleaners, helping to enhance consumer satisfaction and meet market demands for quieter appliances.
-
Testing and Certification
- Testing laboratories can utilize the standardized methods to generate reproducible results, facilitating comparative assessments of vacuum cleaner acoustics and supporting compliance with noise emission regulations.
-
Regulatory Compliance
- Supports authorities in the verification and enforcement of labeling schemes and noise regulations, promoting fair competition and transparency in appliance ratings.
-
Consumer Information
- Provides reliable data for noise emissions, assisting consumers in making informed purchasing decisions based on product acoustics and environmental comfort considerations.
Related Standards
For a complete approach to acoustic noise testing and floor cleaning appliance evaluation, the following IEC standards are closely related and intended to be used in conjunction:
- IEC 60704-1:2021: General requirements for airborne noise testing of household appliances.
- IEC 60704-2-20: Particular requirements for hard-wet cleaning appliances, including noise testing methods.
- IEC 62885-2: Measurement methods for dry vacuum cleaner performance.
- IEC TS 62885-1: General requirements on test material and test equipment for surface cleaning appliances.
- IEC 60704-2-17: Particular requirements for floor cleaning robots (in development).
By adhering to IEC 60704-2-1:2026, stakeholders ensure consistent, accurate, and internationally recognized documentation for the assessment of airborne acoustical noise emissions from household dry vacuum cleaners and related accessories. This supports industry best practices, regulatory compliance, and improved end-user experiences in the appliance market.
