Applies to electric hand-held hairdryers for household and similar use supplied from mains, which operate with a flow of air. Can also be applied to analogous electrically operated devices such as hairstyling appliances, which produce the airflow by a fan. Does not apply to hair care appliances with radiant heating and helmet-type hairdryers.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60704-2-9:2003 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), focusing on the determination of airborne acoustical noise from household and similar electrical appliances. Specifically, Part 2-9 defines particular requirements for electric hair care appliances such as hand-held hairdryers and hairstyling devices that operate with airflow generated by a fan. This standard does not cover hair care appliances using radiant heating or helmet-type hairdryers.
Designed to be used alongside IEC 60704-1:1997, which establishes general requirements for noise measurement, IEC 60704-2-9 provides a test code tailored to the unique acoustic testing challenges of electric hair care appliances. It ensures precise and repeatable noise measurements, facilitating reliable comparison of acoustic emissions between products and across testing laboratories worldwide.
Key Topics
- Scope: Targets electrically powered, hand-held hairdryers and similar airflow-producing devices powered from the mains supply for household and similar use.
- Measurement Methods: Specifies conditions and procedures for acoustic noise measurement that realistically simulate practical usage.
- Test Instrumentation & Setup: Details apparatus and environmental conditions required for valid and consistent noise measurements.
- Operating Conditions: Defines the positioning and operational mode of appliances during testing to mimic typical consumer use.
- Sound Pressure and Power Levels: Provides procedures to measure and calculate sound pressure levels and sound power levels accurately.
- Recording & Reporting: Identifies the specific data and test parameters that must be recorded and documented in conformity reports.
- Standardized Test Table: Includes a normative annex with the recommended test conditions essential for consistent noise testing.
- Relationship to IEC 60704-1: Supplements and modifies relevant parts of the general test code with appliance-specific requirements.
Applications
IEC 60704-2-9 is essential for:
- Manufacturers developing or refining electric hair care appliances to ensure products meet standardized noise emission criteria.
- Testing Laboratories conducting acoustical noise assessments, enabling consistent measurement and reporting of appliance noise emissions.
- Regulators and Certification Bodies seeking to enforce noise limits or certify performance claims related to electric hair care appliances.
- Quality Assurance Teams monitoring production compliance with international noise standards.
- Consumer Safety and Comfort: Assisting in providing products that comply with noise emission levels to enhance user comfort and reduce acoustic pollution during use.
By adhering to IEC 60704-2-9, stakeholders can ensure that noise emissions from hairdryers and similar devices are evaluated precisely, supporting product development that balances performance and noise control.
