This part of IEC 60706 examines the maintainability requirements and related design and use parameter, and discusses some activities necessary to achieve the required maintainability characteristics and their relationship to planning of maintenance. It describes the general approach in reaching these objectives and shows how maintainability characteristics should be specified in a requirements document or contract. It is not intended to be a complete guide on how to specify or to contract for maintainability. Its purpose is to define the range of considerations when maintainability characteristics are included as requirements for the development or the acquisition of an item.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60706-2:2006 is an international standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that addresses the maintainability of equipment during the design and development phase. It sets forth maintainability requirements and outlines studies necessary to integrate maintainability characteristics early in the lifecycle of products. The standard provides a clear framework for specifying maintainability criteria in requirement documents or contracts to ensure effective maintenance planning and execution.
This standard is essential for engineers, designers, and maintenance planners aiming to optimize equipment lifecycle costs and ensure high availability and reliability through improved maintainability design.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Maintainability
Defines the maintainability requirements relevant to the design and development phase, emphasizing the importance of considering maintainability as part of planning for maintenance activities throughout the equipment lifecycle. -
Maintainability Principles
Focuses on integrating maintainability objectives into the design process by addressing maintenance tasks, serviceability, ease of inspection and repair, and minimizing downtime. -
Life Cycle Maintenance Activities
Covers maintainability considerations through various phases including concept and definition, design and development, manufacture and installation, operational use and maintenance, and disposal. -
Specification of Maintainability Requirements
Guides on establishing quantitative and qualitative maintainability characteristics, constraints, and verification methods to be embedded in project specifications and contracts. -
Maintainability Studies
Details the analyses performed during design, including maintainability predictions, allocation of maintainability objectives, and use of analytical tools to foresee and enhance maintainability outcomes. -
Design Support
Includes practical aids such as design criteria, checklists, liaison roles, and design reviews to ensure maintainability is effectively considered and implemented.
Applications
-
Product Development
Integrating maintainability requirements in early design phases to reduce life cycle costs and improve equipment availability, reliability, and serviceability. -
Maintenance Planning
Facilitating maintenance strategy formulation by defining clear maintainability objectives and constraints, better supporting maintenance management and scheduling. -
Contracting and Procurement
Providing a basis for specifying maintainability requirements in procurement documents, ensuring suppliers deliver equipment that meets maintainability expectations. -
System Engineering
Supporting cross-disciplinary collaboration between design engineers, maintenance experts, and operators to optimize maintainability during product development. -
Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM)
Enhancing RCM programs by coupling maintainability analysis with reliability data to create robust maintenance strategies and resource allocation.
