IEC 60717:2012 applies to capacitors and resistors with unidirectional wire terminations intended for use in electronic equipment. This standard provides a method for determination of the space required by capacitors and resistors with unidirectional wire terminations. NOTE: Instead of measuring the actual space, it may be sufficient to ensure that a component fits into the maximum space for which it is designed. This may be achieved by means of fixed gauges. The main technical changes with respect to the first edition are the following: - employment of the millimetre-based grid, the preferred grid system given in IEC 60097, - employment of SI units only, causing deletion of the imperial dimensions from Table 1, - reduction of the tolerance on the chamfer depth in Figure 1, and - introduction of requirements on information to be given in a relevant specification.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60717:2012, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), specifies a standardized method for determining the space required by capacitors and resistors with unidirectional wire terminations used in electronic equipment. The standard ensures accuracy and uniformity in evaluating the dimensional requirements of these components to support reliable PCB layout, assembly, and manufacturing processes. This method facilitates clear communication between component manufacturers and equipment designers, ensuring components fit correctly and maintain compatibility with automated assembly systems.
Key enhancements in the 2012 edition include the use of a millimetre-based grid (adopting IEC 60097), exclusive use of SI units, tighter tolerances for gauge board features, and clearer requirements for specification documentation.
Key Topics
- Component Type: Applies to capacitors and resistors with unidirectional wire terminations, which are commonly mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs).
- Measurement Scope: Outlines the determination of the width, length, and height of a mounted component, ensuring all spatial requirements are addressed.
- Gauge Board Method: Introduces a reference gauge board based on a standard millimetre grid system for determining the component’s occupied space, rather than relying on ad-hoc measurements.
- Grid hole diameters and spacing are aligned with IEC 60097 grid systems and IEC 60301 preferred lead sizes.
- Chamfer depth and position tolerances are defined to ensure measurement consistency.
- Dimensional Specifications: Encourages the provision of specific information in component specifications, including:
- Measured dimensions (width, length, height)
- Grid spacing and hole diameters
- Simplified Fit Verification: Notes that, rather than measuring every unit, it may be sufficient to verify fit using a fixed gauge, streamlining the quality control process.
Applications
IEC 60717:2012 is widely used throughout the electronics manufacturing industry, particularly by:
- Component Manufacturers: To define and verify the space envelopes of capacitors and resistors with unidirectional terminations, ensuring products are compatible with common PCB layouts and automation equipment.
- Electronics Designers: To specify component clearances and placements on PCBs, facilitating reliable circuit design and effective assembly.
- Assembly Engineers: To verify that selected components fit standardized gauge boards and prevent assembly issues related to inconsistent component sizes.
- Quality Assurance: For conducting incoming quality checks and compliance testing using standardized fixed gauges, assisting in efficient and reliable acceptance of components.
- Specification Writers: To include uniform dimensional requirements in procurement and product specifications, reducing ambiguity and mismatches during the manufacturing process.
By ensuring that component dimensions align with standardized grid systems, IEC 60717:2012 supports smoother integration into automated assembly processes and fosters global interoperability in component supply and device manufacturing.
