IEC 60721-3-4:2019 classifies groups of environmental parameters and their severities to which products are subjected when installed for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations. Weatherprotected locations where products can be mounted for stationary use permanently or temporarily are addressed in IEC 60721-3-3. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1995 and Amendment 1:1996. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Clause 1: reworded. b) Clause 2: normative references have been updated. c) Clause 3: definitions have been updated. d) Clause 4: reworded and simplified. e) Clause 5: revised and updated. Several classes have been replaced by completely new classes based on the use of new information obtained from referenced technical reports. f) Defined values of chemically active substances are now by reference to ISO 9223. g) Tables 1 through 5: updated. The contents of the corrigendum of July 2023 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
IEC 60721-3-4:2019 Overview
IEC 60721-3-4:2019 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on the classification of environmental conditions specifically for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations. It defines groups of environmental parameters and their severity levels to which products are exposed when installed permanently or semi-permanently without shelter from weather elements.
This third edition updates the previous 1995 version, reflecting advanced technical knowledge and improved classification accuracy. It is essential for manufacturers, designers, and engineers involved in product development and testing to correctly assess environmental stresses on equipment installed outdoors but not shielded from meteorological factors.
Key Topics
Classification of Environmental Parameters and Severities
IEC 60721-3-4:2019 categorizes environmental factors into key groups with specific classes and severity levels:
- Climatic Conditions (K): Includes parameters such as temperature ranges, humidity, and precipitation patterns affecting product functionality.
- Special Climatic Conditions (Z): Covers unique or irregular climatic influences deviating from common meteorological effects.
- Biological Conditions (B): Addresses biological agents like fungi, mold, and insects contributing to product degradation.
- Chemically Active Substances (C): Defines exposure levels to corrosive chemicals, dust, and pollutants with references to ISO 9223 for chemical aggressiveness.
- Mechanically Active Substances (S): Classifies the impact of dust, sand, and other particulates causing abrasion or blockages.
- Mechanical Conditions (M): Encompasses physical stresses like vibration, shock, and seismic activity that stationary units may experience.
Updated Normative References and Definitions
The standard includes revised normative references and updated definitions to align with the latest technological and terminological standards, ensuring clarity and consistency in application.
Revised and New Classes
Significant technical changes include the replacement of several environmental classes informed by recent technical reports, improving accuracy in real-world application and product resilience assessment.
Practical Applications
Product Design and Testing
IEC 60721-3-4 serves as a critical guideline for designing electrical and electronic products meant for outdoor, non-weatherprotected installations such as industrial equipment, communication devices, and control panels. By referencing this standard, designers can:
- Select materials and protective measures to withstand classified environmental severities.
- Simulate environmental conditions during laboratory testing to predict product performance and durability.
- Improve product reliability by considering combined environmental stresses such as humidity and vibration.
Environmental Stress Assessment
This classification aids manufacturers in assessing the maximum short-term stresses products may face during stationary use, allowing for better warranty definitions, maintenance schedules, and risk management.
Specification Development
Engineers and procurement specialists use IEC 60721-3-4 to develop technical specifications and conditions for product deployment environments, contributing to standardized tender and compliance documents.

- ISO 9223: Corrosion of metals and alloys - Classification of corrosivity of atmospheres, which IEC 60721-3-4 references for chemically active substances.
- IEC 60721 Series (All Parts): Offers comprehensive environmental classifications for various product use cases including transport and storage.
- IEC TR 62130 to IEC TR 62135: Technical reports linked to environmental testing guidelines and product reliability assessment.
- IEC 60068 Series: Environmental testing standards often used in conjunction to simulate specific stresses.
By applying the framework of IEC 60721-3-4:2019, professionals ensure that products destined for outdoor applications at non-weatherprotected sites meet internationally recognized standards for environmental durability and operational reliability. This facilitates global market access, reduces failure rates, and extends product lifetimes under challenging environmental conditions.
