IEC 60703-1:2022 applies to automatic electrical controls for use in, on, or in association with equipment for household appliance and similar use. This document applies to - the inherent safety of automatic electrical controls, and - functional safety of automatic electrical controls and safety related systems, - controls where the performance (for example the effect of EMC phenomena) of the product can impair the overall safety and performance of the controlled system, - the operating values, operating times, and operating sequences where such are associated with equipment safety. This document specifies the requirements for construction, operation and testing of automatic electrical controls used in, on, or in association with an equipment.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60730-1:2022 is a critical international standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that addresses automatic electrical controls used in household appliances and similar equipment. This sixth edition, published in 2022, sets forth comprehensive general requirements relating to the design, construction, operation, and testing of these controls to ensure inherent safety, functional safety, and reliable performance.
The standard covers controls that may impact the safety and performance of the overall system, including their operating values, sequences, and timing. It aims to mitigate risks such as electric shock, component failure, and interference effects like electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) phenomena that could affect operation and safety.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: IEC 60730-1 focuses on electrical automatic controls integral to household and similar appliances, emphasizing safety and performance integrity.
- Definitions and Terminology: The standard provides detailed terms covering ratings, control types, construction, functions, software aspects, and fault/error management relevant to automatic controls.
- General Requirements: It outlines construction, operation, marking, testing procedures, and technical information disclosure necessary for safety compliance.
- Electric Shock Protection: Requirements for protective insulation, actuating mechanisms, safe terminals, and enclosures to prevent electric hazards.
- Construction and Materials: Specifications address materials, durability, mounting, openings, cord attachments, and the use of software in automated control systems.
- Electrical Safety Measures: Guidelines on protective earthing, insulation distances such as creepage and clearances, resistance to electric strength and insulation breakdown.
- Component Requirements: Standards for transformers, capacitors, fuses, relays, thermistors, and other essential components within controls.
- Fault and Environmental Stress Assessment: Procedures for electronic circuit fault evaluation, moisture/dust resistance, temperature stress, aging, and endurance testing.
- Software Reliability: Considerations for software-based controls including error avoidance, fault control techniques, and memory tests to assure functional safety.
Applications
IEC 60730-1:2022 is widely applicable across industries producing or using automatic electrical control equipment, specifically:
- Household Appliances: Washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, HVAC systems, and other domestic electrical devices.
- Consumer Electronics: Controls embedded in devices requiring automated operation for user safety and product reliability.
- Safety-Related Systems: Equipment where malfunction or improper control could pose hazards to people or property, benefitting from stringent safety and performance standards.
- Manufacturing and Quality Assurance: Serving as a benchmark for design verification, testing protocols, and compliance assessment during product development and production.
- Regulatory Compliance: Enabling manufacturers to meet local and global safety requirements, facilitating market access and ensuring consumer protection.
Related Standards
- IEC 60730 Series: Other parts focus on specific control types (e.g., temperature controls, motor controls) complementing Part 1's general requirements.
- IEC 60335 Series: Standards for safety of household and similar electrical appliances, often used alongside IEC 60730 for comprehensive product safety evaluation.
- IEC 61000 Series: Address electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) to ensure electrical equipment does not suffer or cause interference, aligning with IEC 60730 requirements concerning EMC impacts.
- ISO/IEC 61508: Functional safety standards for electrical/electronic systems that relate to safety considerations in automatic controls.
- IEC 61131: Standards on programmable controllers applicable to software components within automatic control systems.
