Gives four methods for measuring the coating geometry of optical fibres. The following parameters are measured: coating diameter, coating non-circularity, coating-cladding concentricity error. The methods are conducted off-line during inspection. They are not suitable for on-line, in-process measurements.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60793-1-21:2001 is an international standard that defines uniform test methods for measuring the coating geometry of optical fibres. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and consistency of optical fibre coatings, which are vital for optimal fibre performance in telecommunications and data networking. The standard specifies off-line measurement techniques, focusing on parameters such as coating diameter, coating non-circularity, and coating-cladding concentricity error. These methods are essential for manufacturers and quality control professionals involved in fibre optic production and testing.
Key Topics
-
Coating Geometry Parameters:
- Coating Diameter: Measurement of the external diameter of the protective coating on the optical fibre.
- Coating Non-Circularity: Assessment of how much the coating deviates from a perfect circle.
- Coating-Cladding Concentricity Error: Evaluation of the alignment between the fibre’s coating and its cladding.
-
Measurement Methods:
- The standard outlines four distinct off-line methods for measuring these parameters, suitable for inspection but not for in-process (on-line) measurement.
- Method A, based on side-view light distribution, is designated as the reference test method for resolving disputes.
- Method B involves mechanical techniques to assess coating diameter and non-circularity.
-
Procedures and Apparatus:
- Includes detailed procedural steps, calibration requirements, sample requirements, and data analysis approaches.
- Specifies apparatus such as optical microscopes, laser gauges, and appropriate sample fixtures for accurate and repeatable measurements.
-
Reporting and Specification:
- Defines what measurement data and technical details must be reported and included in product specifications.
- Emphasizes clear documentation of measurement conditions, methods used, calibration details, and specimen descriptions.
Applications
The application of IEC 60793-1-21 is critical in several areas involving optical fibre production and quality assurance, such as:
- Manufacturing Quality Control: Ensures that fibres meet dimensional requirements, which is essential for subsequent cabling, connectorization, and splicing processes.
- Product Development: Provides engineers and researchers with standardized measurement methods to assess and optimize coating processes and materials.
- Compliance and Certification: Supports manufacturers in meeting industry requirements and customer expectations for optical fibre products.
- Failure Analysis: Helps identify deviations in fibre geometry that could lead to increased attenuation, mechanical failure, or improper fit in cables and connectors.
By adhering to IEC 60793-1-21, organizations can enhance product reliability, support interoperability, and maintain high standards in fibre optic networks.
Related Standards
- IEC 60793-1-20: Focuses on measurement methods and test procedures for the geometry of the fibre core and cladding, providing complementary guidance for full-fibre dimensional assessment.
- IEC 60793-1-22: Details procedures for length measurement of optical fibres, relevant for both production and installation quality checks.
- Other IEC 60793-1 Series: Address measurement and test procedures for a range of mechanical, transmission, optical, and environmental characteristics.
These related standards ensure a comprehensive framework for all aspects of optical fibre testing, facilitating consistent quality, reliability, and performance across the telecommunications industry.
