IEC 60794-2-11:2012 presents the detailed requirements specific to this type of cable to ensure compatibility with ISO/IEC 11801, Information technology - Generic cabling for customer premises. The requirements of the Family Specification IEC 60794-2-10:2011 are applicable to cables covered by this standard. Particular requirements detailed in clause 4 either define a specific option relative to the requirements of IEC 60794-2-10:2011 or define additional requirements. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2005. It constitutes a technical revision. The main changes are: - Incorporation of the OM4 cabled fiber performance category; - Incorporatino of the OS2 cabled fiber performance category; - Incorporation of the B6_a1 and B6_a2 fibre category as per IEC 60793-2-50:2008.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60794-2-11:2012 is an international standard specifying the detailed requirements for indoor optical fibre cables, specifically simplex and duplex variants intended for use in premises cabling. This technical specification integrates with the broader IEC 60794 family and ensures compatibility with ISO/IEC 11801, the global standard for generic customer premises cabling. The second edition of this standard updates and replaces the 2005 version, incorporating new fiber performance categories such as OM4 and OS2, as well as the B6_a1 and B6_a2 fiber types defined in IEC 60793-2-50:2008.
By setting strict guidelines on cable construction, environmental endurance, and optical performance, IEC 60794-2-11:2012 ensures reliable, high-performance indoor fibre optic installations suitable for modern IT infrastructure demands.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Compliance
The standard applies to indoor simplex and duplex optical fiber cables and mandates conformance with the IEC 60794-2-10 family specification. It covers specific options and added requirements not detailed in the family specification to ensure optimal performance within indoor environments. -
Optical Fiber Types and Performance
Supports various fiber categories including:- Single-mode fibers: OS1, OS2 categories, including B1.1, B1.3, B6_a1, and B6_a2 fiber types
- Multimode fibers: OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 classes with core sizes of 50 µm or 62.5 µm
These classifications cater to different transmission bandwidth and attenuation requirements.
-
Environmental Requirements
Indoor cables must withstand temperature cycling in the range of -20 °C to +60 °C without degradation in optical attenuation characteristics, ensuring durability in varying building environments. -
Transmission Requirements
Defines maximum allowable attenuation coefficients for various fiber types (e.g., ≤3.5 dB/km at 850 nm for multimode fibers) and minimum bandwidth levels for multimode fibers (up to 3500 MHz·km for OM4 at 850 nm). -
Normative References
References key IEC standards for fiber specification and testing methods, such as IEC 60793-2-10 and IEC 60793-2-50, ensuring holistic standard compliance across product specifications.
Applications
IEC 60794-2-11:2012 is essential for industries and sectors deploying indoor fiber optic networks, including:
-
Enterprise Premises Cabling
Enables installation of simplex and duplex fiber cables for high-speed data connections within office buildings, campuses, and data centers. -
Telecommunications Infrastructure
Supports indoor fiber routes linking main distribution frames with workstations, enabling robust communication backbones that comply with global cabling standards. -
Network Equipment Manufacturers
Assists in developing cables compatible with prevalent fiber categories ensuring interoperability and compliance. -
Building and Construction Industry
Guides specification of optical cables that meet environmental and transmission standards for new constructions or retrofitting existing facilities.
Adherence to this standard helps stakeholders achieve optimized data throughput, minimize signal loss, and future-proof premises with fiber optic cabling of certified quality.
