IEC 60811-407:2012 gives the procedure to examine possible interaction between insulation material and filling compound of filled cable. IEC 60811-407:2012 cancels and replaces Clause 11 of IEC 60811-4-2:2004, which is withdrawn. Full details of the replacements are shown in Annex A of IEC 60811-100:2012. There are no specific technical changes with respect to the previous edition, but see the Foreword to IEC 60811-100:2012. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60811-100:2012.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60811-407:2012 is an internationally recognized standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It defines the test methods for non-metallic materials used in electric and optical fibre cables, specifically focusing on the measurement of mass increase in polyethylene and polypropylene compounds. This standard is crucial for assessing the interaction between insulation materials and filling compounds in filled cables, ensuring reliable cable performance and longevity. IEC 60811-407:2012 replaces Clause 11 of the withdrawn IEC 60811-4-2:2004 without technical changes, and should be used alongside IEC 60811-100:2012 for comprehensive testing procedures.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: The standard provides a detailed procedure to examine possible chemical or physical interactions between cable insulation materials and filling compounds through mass increase measurement of test samples.
- Test Methodology:
- Preparation of test samples involves cutting insulated cable cores and preparing specific lengths for immersion and control tests.
- Immersion of test pieces in pre-heated filling compounds at controlled temperatures (60°C or 70°C depending on the compound’s drop-point) for a continuous 10-day period.
- Accurate weighing using an analytical balance to determine the change in mass after the immersion process.
- Calculation of mass increase as a percentage, which indicates the degree of interaction between materials.
- Equipment Used: Glass vessels, ovens with natural airflow, and precision analytical balances with 0.1 mg sensitivity are mandatory for standardized testing.
- Reporting: Results must be documented following the framework established in IEC 60811-100, including specific measurements, test conditions, and observations.
Applications
- Cable Material Selection: Manufacturers use this standard during the development and quality control of electric and optical fibre cables to choose compatible non-metallic materials, preventing degradation or failure due to material incompatibility.
- Quality Assurance: Routine testing of cables ensures that the insulation materials and filling compounds do not adversely interact under operational thermal conditions, maintaining cable integrity.
- Research & Development: Facilitates innovation by providing a benchmark method to evaluate new polyethylene or polypropylene compounds, predicting their behavior within cable constructions.
- Industrial Compliance: Adhering to IEC 60811-407 supports compliance with international cable manufacturing standards, strengthening product acceptance in global markets.
