IEC 60819-3-4:2013 specifies requirements for two types of aramid fibre paper containing mica particles and designated as PAaM: - type 1: calendered aramid paper containing mica particles; - type 2: uncalendered aramid paper containing mica particles. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone. SAFETY WARNING: It is the responsibility of the user of the methods contained or referred to in this document to ensure that they are used in a safe manner. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2001. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: the document was updated including new thicknesses and relevant values as from Table 1. Keywords: aramid fibre paper containing mica particles, PAaM, calendered, uncalendered
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60819-3-4:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for non-cellulosic aramid fibre paper containing up to 50% mica particles used in electrical applications. This document is part of the IEC 60819 series, which addresses non-cellulosic papers designed for electrical insulation purposes. The standard particularly covers two types of aramid fibre paper with mica particles, designated as PAaM:
- Type 1: Calendered aramid paper containing mica particles
- Type 2: Uncalendered aramid paper containing mica particles
The 2013 edition represents a technical revision that updates thickness options and relevant performance values, ensuring materials conform to rigorous electrical and physical requirements.
Key Topics
Material Types and Composition
- Aramid fibre paper incorporated with mica particle content capped at 50% by mass.
- Two material process variants: calendered (Type 1) and uncalendered (Type 2), each with distinct density and moisture content limits.
Performance Requirements
- Moisture Content: Maximum 10.0% for Type 1; maximum 14.0% for Type 2.
- Thermal Classification: Minimum Relative Temperature Index (RTI) of 220°C based on long-term thermal aging.
- Electrical Properties: Dissipation factor not exceeding 0.1; permittivity of 4.5 ± 0.5 for Type 1 and 3.0 ± 0.5 for Type 2.
- Physical Properties: Apparent density of approximately 1.10 g/cm³ (±15%) for Type 1 and 0.4 g/cm³ (±15%) for Type 2.
- Mechanical strength parameters including tensile strength, elongation at break, and edge tearing resistance according to specific test conditions outlined in IEC 60819-2.
Testing and Compliance
- The standard references IEC 60819-1 for definitions and general requirements and IEC 60819-2 for methods of test.
- Physical and electrical properties are detailed with nominal and minimum/maximum limits for various thicknesses outlined in Table 1 of the standard.
Safety Notice
- Users must ensure safe and correct application of testing methods and material selection, tailored to the specific electrical insulation requirements of their use case.
Applications
IEC 60819-3-4:2013 aramid fibre paper containing mica particles is specialized for electrical insulation in high-performance electrical apparatus. Typical applications include:
- Insulation in transformers, motors, and generators, where high thermal resistance and dielectric strength are critical.
- Use in environments requiring excellent moisture resistance and mechanical durability under thermal stress.
- Electrical equipment manufacturing requiring customized insulating papers with balanced mica content for enhanced electrical and mechanical properties.
- Replacement or improvement over traditional cellulosic papers, particularly where higher temperature tolerance and reliability are necessary.
By adhering to IEC 60819-3-4 requirements, manufacturers and engineers ensure reliable dielectric insulation and maintain long-term operational stability of electrical devices.
Related Standards
IEC 60819-3-4:2013 forms part of the broader IEC 60819 series on non-cellulosic electrical papers:
- IEC 60819-1: Definitions and general requirements for non-cellulosic papers for electrical purposes.
- IEC 60819-2: Methods of testing electrical insulating papers, including procedures relevant for verifying compliance with IEC 60819-3-4.
