IEC 60884-2-1:2025 applies to fused plugs, where the fuses are primarily intended to protect the flexible cable connected to the plug. These fuses are not intended to protect appliances or parts of them against overload. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2006. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment to IEC 60884‑1, fourth edition.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60884-2-1:2025 - "Plugs and socket-outlets for household and similar purposes - Part 2‑1: Particular requirements for fused plugs" - is the third edition (2025) technical revision that supplements IEC 60884-1:2022. It specifies particular safety, construction and marking requirements for fused plugs whose fuses are intended primarily to protect the flexible cable or cord connected to the plug (not to protect appliances or their parts against overload). This edition aligns the fused-plug requirements with the latest general standard for plugs and socket-outlets.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and intent
- Applies to fused plugs where the fuse protects the flexible cable/cord.
- Clarifies that fused plugs are not intended for appliance overload protection.
- Notes that fused plugs are not used in some countries (e.g., AU, DK, ZA).
- Alignment and normative references
- Aligned with IEC 60884-1:2022 (general requirements).
- References low-voltage fuse standards: IEC 60269-1 and IEC 60269-3.
- Ratings and marking
- Fused plugs must have a minimum current rating ≥ the rating of the fuse indicated by marking.
- Fused plugs must be marked to indicate the presence of a fuse; rewirable and non‑rewirable plugs require permanent marking of permissible fuse/current ratings.
- Fuse-link construction and installation
- Fuse-links shall be replaceable and mounted within the plug body between the conductor termination and the corresponding pin.
- Fuse-links must not be fitted in the earthing circuit.
- For non‑polarized systems, fuses are fitted in all current-carrying poles; for polarized systems, only in line poles.
- It must not be possible to remove or replace the fuse unless the plug is fully withdrawn from the socket-outlet.
- Design and safety checks
- Requirements cover contact retention with fuse-links, polarized insertion, and compliance tests derived from IEC 60884-1 clauses (protection against electric shock, terminals, insulation, temperature rise, mechanical strength, etc.).
Applications and who uses this standard
- Product designers and manufacturers of fused plugs and portable electrical accessories.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies verifying compliance and safety.
- Electrical safety engineers, compliance officers, and procurement teams specifying safe plugs for household and similar uses.
- Regulators and standards committees harmonizing national requirements with IEC norms.
