IEC 60947-8:2021 specifies requirements for control units, which control a switching device in response to the PTC thermistors incorporated in rotating electrical machines and the industrial application. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2003, Amendment 1:2006 and Amendment 2:2011. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: safety aspects related to: general aspects; limited energy circuits; electronic circuits; alignment to IEC 60947-1:2020; wire break detection function; the term detector is replaced by thermistor; reference to IEC 60738-1-4.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60947-8:2021 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for control units used for built-in thermal protection (PTC) in rotating electrical machines. This standard forms Part 8 of the IEC 60947 series focused on low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. It addresses the design, construction, electrical characteristics, and testing of control units that monitor Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) thermistors integrated into rotating machines to ensure safe operation and prevent overheating.
The 2021 edition is a significant technical revision from its previous edition, including updates related to safety, electronic circuit requirements, wire break detection functions, and alignment with IEC 60947-1:2020. It replaces the 2003 edition along with amendments from 2006 and 2011.
Key Topics
- Thermal Protection Control Units: Design and operational features of control units that respond to PTC thermistors embedded in rotating electrical machines.
- Operating Temperatures: Defined rated operating temperatures for protection systems and PTC thermistors to ensure reliable thermal protection.
- Electrical Ratings: Detailed requirements on rated voltages, currents, and making/breaking capacities for switching devices within the control units.
- Safety Aspects: Integration of limited energy circuits, fault detection including short-circuit and wire break detection, and improved safety under abnormal conditions.
- Construction and Materials: Criteria for materials, electrical clearances, creepage distances, terminals, and protective earth provisions to ensure durability and safety.
- Performance Requirements: Tests for dielectric strength, temperature rise, shock and vibration resistance, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and abnormal service conditions.
- Testing Protocols: Prescribed type, routine, sampling, and special tests to verify compliance with construction and performance standards.
- PTC Thermistor Characteristics: Normative annexes provide guidance on PTC thermistor types (including Mark A thermistors), interchangeability, and verification tests.
- Protective Separation: Additional requirements for equipment that requires protective separation, including impedance testing and touch current measurements.
Applications
IEC 60947-8:2021 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and users of rotating electrical machines such as:
- Electric Motors: Ensuring robust thermal protection during operation to avoid overheating and associated damage.
- Industrial Equipment: Providing reliable built-in protection for motors and machinery in harsh or continuous-use environments.
- Control Panels: Integration of compliant control units for safety and performance monitoring, essential in automation and manufacturing plants.
- Maintenance and Safety Systems: Facilitating early fault detection via PTC sensor circuit monitoring (including wire break and short-circuit detection) to improve preventive maintenance measures.
- Low-voltage Switchgear and Controlgear: Enhancing the safety features and operational reliability of switchgear assemblies incorporating motor protection units.
