IEC 60974-11:2021 is applicable to electrode holders for manual metal arc welding with electrodes up to 10 mm in diameter. It is not applicable to electrode holders for underwater welding. This document specifies safety and performance requirements of electrode holders. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition, published in 2010. This edition constitutes a technical revision. The significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition are the following: - Modify 3.6 type A to category A; - Modify 3.7 type B to category B; - Modify 8.1 to clarify reference to IEC 60529; - Modification of 10.1 for clarification purposes; - Added Bibliography. This part of IEC 60974 is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60974-1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60974-11:2021 - "Arc welding equipment - Part 11: Electrode holders" is the fourth edition international standard that defines safety and performance requirements for electrode holders used in manual metal arc welding with electrodes up to 10 mm diameter. It excludes underwater welding and is intended to be used together with IEC 60974-1 (welding power sources). The 2021 edition updates terminology (category A/B), clarifies references to IEC 60529 (IP/access probes), refines mechanical clauses, and adds a bibliography.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & designation
- Applicable to electrode holders for manual metal arc welding with electrodes ≤ 10 mm.
- Holders are designated by rated current at 60% duty cycle and must meet dimensional and cable‑range requirements (examples: 125 A for electrodes 1.6–2.5 mm and cable 10–16 mm²; up to 500 A for electrodes 6.3–10 mm and cable 95–120 mm²).
- Note: special rule for 35% duty cycle ratings (may use next higher rated value, max 600 A).
- Protection against electric shock
- Two categories: Category A (no live part accessible to the standard test finger per IEC 60529) and Category B (special head-access limits; sphere tests related to electrode diameter).
- Insulation components and springs not intended as current carriers must be insulated.
- Tests and type testing
- Type-test sequence includes visual inspection, temperature rise, impact resistance, insulation resistance, and dielectric strength.
- Tests are performed on new, assembled holders at ambient 10–40 °C.
- Insulation and humidity
- Humidity conditioning: 48 h in 91–95% RH at 20–30 °C, then insulation resistance measured.
- Required insulation resistance after humidity treatment: ≥ 1 MΩ (measured with 500 V DC).
- Mechanical & operational requirements
- Safe and rapid electrode fitting and stub release, capacity to weld with stub length of 50 mm, and clamping without operator-applied pressure.
- Requirements for cable entry, cable insulation penetration, connection, and impact resistance are specified.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers of electrode holders and welding consumables to design and certify products.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type and routine tests.
- Safety engineers, procurement specialists and OEMs specifying compliant holders for welding equipment.
- Regulatory authorities and conformity assessment bodies assessing electrical and mechanical safety.
